According to recent reports, Apple is working on one of the most comprehensive changes in iPhone history. The focus is on two major projects: a foldable iPhone and a completely redesigned model for the 20th anniversary. Both devices could change the direction of iPhone development in the long term.
Since the introduction of the first iPhone in January 2007, Apple has significantly shaped the smartphone market. Over the years, there have been many advancements, but fundamental design changes have been relatively rare. Now, it appears that Apple is on the verge of a major transformation.
Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on "the biggest iPhone overhaul in the product's history." This assessment is based, among other things, on internal developments surrounding the future iPhone strategy and new hardware projects.
John Ternus plays a central role
At the center of current developments is Apple's hardware chief, John Ternus. Internally, he is considered one of the most promising candidates to succeed CEO Tim Cook. According to reports, Ternus is currently overseeing a series of iPhone redesigns, described as the most extensive in the product's history.
This includes two projects in particular: a foldable iPhone, which is expected to be released later this year, and an anniversary model with a new design, which may be launched in 2027.
The foldable iPhone: Details and expectations
Apple is reportedly planning to unveil its first foldable iPhone in September. The device is said to open like a book, offering significantly more screen space than previous models.
The concept is similar to existing devices like the Galaxy Z Fold series, although Apple plans to make its own adjustments. The goal is a larger screen for applications such as videos, games, and multitasking. Known technical details so far include:
- A 7.7-inch internal display
- A 5.3-inch external display
- A display technology that reduces, but does not completely eliminate, the typical crease.
Earlier reports suggested that Apple might develop a virtually crease-free display. More recent information downplays this assumption, instead suggesting a visible but optimized solution.
Software also plays a crucial role. iOS 27 is expected to be specifically adapted for the foldable iPhone and support features such as the simultaneous display of multiple apps. This would indicate Apple is placing a greater emphasis on multitasking. Other expected features include:
- Two cameras on the back
- A front camera
- Touch ID in the power button instead of Face ID
These changes suggest that Apple is deliberately deviating from previous iPhone standards with the foldable model.
The iPhone for its 20th anniversary
Alongside the foldable model, Apple is working on another device that could be released to coincide with the iPhone's 20th anniversary. Since the first iPhone was introduced in 2007, such a model would be expected in 2027.
This anniversary iPhone is expected to feature a completely new design. The centerpiece will be a so-called "edge-to-edge" display without any visible cutouts. According to current reports, the key features are:
- A completely borderless display without a notch or Dynamic Island.
- A front camera integrated under the screen
- A case made of curved glass for a seamless appearance.
This design would differ significantly from current iPhone models and represent a clear break with previous design elements.
Uncertainties in implementation
Whether Apple will actually be able to implement the anniversary model as planned is currently unclear. The integration of a camera hidden under the display, in particular, is considered technically challenging.
Even with the foldable iPhone, questions remain, particularly regarding durability and display quality. Nevertheless, the information available so far shows that Apple is willing to implement new technological approaches, even if they involve risks.
Apple is undergoing a fundamental realignment
Apple is apparently preparing two significant steps in the further development of the iPhone. With a foldable model and a radically redesigned anniversary device, two major changes could take place in quick succession.
If the current reports are confirmed, the iPhone faces two crucial years ahead. The planned innovations could not only change Apple's product strategy but also influence the entire smartphone market. (Image: Shutterstock / photoschmidt)
