iPad with A18: Release, performance and new features

A new iPad wasn't unveiled at Apple's last product launch, even though many had expected it. Instead, there were updates for the iPad Air and new MacBooks. The affordable entry-level iPad was left out. However, new clues have emerged regarding its release – and it seems imminent.

The base iPad has traditionally been known not for major innovations, but for solid technology at a comparatively low price. The upcoming model follows this same approach. No major changes are planned, but one important upgrade takes center stage: the new A18 chip.

Release: iPad still planned for first half of 2026

According to a report by Mark Gurman, Apple is still planning to release the new iPad in the first half of 2026. This timeframe is based on iOS 26.4.

Since iOS 26.4 has already reached the release candidate stage, April is considered the most likely release month. However, delays could push the launch into May.

Key new feature: A18 chip in the iPad

The new iPad gets an upgrade from the A16 to the A18 chip from the iPhone 16 series. This results in:

more performance
better future security
Overall faster usage

At its core, however, it remains a classic chip upgrade without major changes to the concept.

Apple Intelligence for the first time in the affordable iPad

With the A18 chip, the iPad now supports Apple Intelligence for the first time. This brings Apple's AI to the entry-level model.

However, many features will be limited at launch. Important Siri and AI features may not be available until iOS 26.5.

Other possible changes

Also under discussion are:

a dedicated C1 modem
an N1 network chip

However, these points have not yet been definitively confirmed.

Criticism: Accessories remain expensive

One problem remains the price of accessories. The iPad costs around 379 euros, the Magic Keyboard Folio around 299 euros.

This adds up to 678 euros – almost as much as a MacBook Neo for 699 euros. This makes the overall package less attractive.

iPad 2026: More power, but hardly any changes

The new iPad is a deliberately small update. The A18 chip delivers more performance and enables Apple Intelligence, while the design and concept remain the same.

The release is still expected in spring 2026, probably in April or May. The biggest criticism remains the expensive accessories. Nevertheless, the iPad remains a solid device that reliably fulfills its purpose – just without any major surprises. (Image: Shutterstock / Framesira)
