Apple Vision Pro: R2 chip should significantly increase performance

The Apple Vision Pro is considered one of the most exciting devices Apple has introduced in recent years. With its combination of powerful hardware, a unique user interface, and immersive displays, it has already positioned itself as a pioneer in mixed reality. Now, there are new clues about the future of the headset: A report from Taiwan suggests that the Vision Pro will receive the new R2 chip as early as next year.

The Vision Pro currently uses the M2 chip as its main processor. This is complemented by the R1 chip, which plays a special role: It is responsible for processing inputs, i.e., data from cameras, sensors, and microphones. According to Apple, this architecture ensures that content appears in real time with virtually no delay. The R1 delivers images within 12 milliseconds—eight times faster than the blink of an eye. But development continues, and the R2 chip could soon take it to the next level.

R2 chip for Apple Vision Pro planned

The Taiwanese newspaper Commercial Times reports that Apple plans to equip the Vision Pro with an R2 chip. This will be produced – just like the upcoming A20 chips for iPhones and M6 chips for Macs – using TSMC's 2-nanometer process. This step is a significant step forward, as smaller structures promise not only more performance but also better energy efficiency. Up to now, the Vision Pro has relied on the R1, which is manufactured using the 3-nanometer process. This already makes it possible to process the inputs from twelve cameras, five sensors, and six microphones so quickly that the display appears absolutely fluid. With the R2 chip, this real-time processing should be even more precise and faster. This means more realistic displays, more stable performance, and an overall noticeably better user experience.

Possible interim updates before R2

In addition to the R2 chip, there's also speculation about an interim update. Previous rumors suggested the Vision Pro could receive an M4 or even M5 chip later this year. A new headband for increased comfort is also said to be in the works, as is an additional color option in Space Black. All of these innovations would make the device more attractive, while the major performance boost with the R2 chip is only expected in a later model.

Schedule still unclear

Whether the upgrade with the R2 chip will actually be released in 2026 is still unclear. The report from Taiwan is the first source to explicitly mention this chip. There are no concrete confirmations from other sources. What is clear is that the company is working hard on its chips and is consistently targeting the next production step at 2 nanometers.

Apple Vision Pro: The R2 chip as a leap into the future

The Apple Vision Pro has already set standards in mixed reality. With the R2 chip, the headset's performance could increase significantly even further. Thanks to TSMC's 2-nanometer production process, a new dimension of speed and efficiency could be achieved. While smaller updates like new M-series chips or an improved headband could come sooner, the R2 chip remains the major innovation for the future. Anyone keeping an eye on the Apple Vision Pro can already see where the journey is headed: toward even more realistic experiences and even faster technology. (Image: Shutterstock / pio3)
