The iPhone 18 has been generating controversy long before its official launch. Although the iPhone 17 launch is imminent, attention is already turning to the next generation. A new report confirms that Apple will take an unusual step with the iPhone 18, significantly altering its previous strategy.
The iPhone lineup has remained virtually unchanged in its structure for several years. A base model, a Plus variant, and the Pro models form the familiar framework. But this rhythm is about to undergo a fundamental change. With the iPhone 17 series, Apple will introduce a new "Air" model, which will replace the Plus and, with its ultra-thin design, could also appeal to Pro users. With the iPhone 18 in 2026, the model policy will shift even more dramatically.
An iPhone generation without a base model
According to a report by ET News, for the first time, there will be no base iPhone released in fall 2026. The iPhone 18 in its standard form will not be part of the fall collection. Instead, Apple will focus exclusively on a selection of high-priced models.
The Fall 2026 Collection
Four devices are planned:
- iPhone 18 Air
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- iPhone 18 Fold
This confirms that the fall lineup will be entirely focused on premium products. This decision marks a clear break with previous tradition, which always included a base model at launch.
Basic iPhone 18 coming later
However, the classic iPhone 18 isn't disappearing completely. It's simply being postponed. Instead of fall 2026, it's scheduled to launch in spring 2027, along with an additional iPhone 18e. This will allow Apple to more clearly differentiate its model launches by price and target audience: fall for high-end models, spring for lower-end models.
background of the decision
The changes were not only reported by ET News, but were also previously hinted at by observers such as Wayne Ma and Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple has reportedly already informed some suppliers of the plans so that production can be prepared accordingly. This underscores that this is not just a rumor, but a planned strategic realignment.
iPhone 18 changes the entire product cycle
The iPhone 18 not only brings new technology, but above all a new structure to the model line. A collection exclusively focused on premium devices, including the first Fold model, will be released in fall 2026. The base iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e will not be released until spring 2027. With this, Apple is fundamentally changing its usual product cycle and setting the course for a clearer distinction between high-end and more affordable alternatives.
