Apple is developing a new operating system codenamed "Charismatic." According to Apple expert Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, this is likely the long-discussed "homeOS." The goal is to capitalize on the growing importance of the smart home sector and establish a proprietary system specifically designed for new Apple devices.
Apple has already created four powerful platforms: iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Each is tailored to a specific device class and forms the backbone of its operation. With "Charismatic," however, Apple aims to enter a new area: the home. The first devices to run on this system are a planned smart home hub in 2026 and a tabletop robot expected in 2027.
The combination of existing systems
"Charismatic" isn't just another operating system. Rather, it combines elements of tvOS and watchOS. The planned design makes this clear. Apps will be arranged in a hexagonal grid, similar to the Apple Watch.
Focus on watch faces and widgets
The user interface focuses on watch faces and widgets. This display is intended to provide a quick overview of things like appointments or reminders. This distinguishes the system from the classic app layouts of other Apple devices and demonstrates that it is primarily intended for everyday use.
Multi-user support as a central feature
A crucial aspect is supporting multiple users. Devices with "Charismatic" are designed to be easy to share. An integrated front camera recognizes the faces of approaching people and automatically adapts content, layout, and features to their preferences. This creates a personalized user experience without the need to constantly switch between apps manually.
Control via Siri and touch
Interaction with the operating system will primarily be via Siri. Voice commands will be the focus, allowing many actions without manual input. At the same time, touch control will remain an option. Apple is thus focusing on flexible operation that allows both voice and touch commands.
Pre-installed apps from Apple
At launch, "Charismatic" will ship with a selection of familiar Apple apps, including Calendar, Camera, Music, Reminders, and Notes. This builds on the existing user experience and ensures that the most important applications are immediately available.
Apple's next step in the smart home sector
The development of "Charismatic" demonstrates that Apple is significantly expanding its smart home strategy. The new operating system combines familiar elements with new ideas like automatic facial recognition and true multi-user support. While the release of the first devices is still some way off, it's already clear that Apple wants to create an operating system that makes the home more personal, smarter, and more flexible.
