According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is working on a new, ring-shaped home security camera. The device will be fully integrated into the Home app and can be used for both security and smart home automation. An exact release date has not been announced, but the camera could be released alongside or after the smart home hub, which Apple plans to launch in 2026.
The market for smart home products is growing rapidly, with major names like Amazon with Ring and Google with Nest dominating the industry. Apple is already present with HomeKit and the Home app, but so far has primarily offered software support and cloud services for devices from other manufacturers. With its own surveillance camera, the company now wants to strengthen its presence in the hardware sector and set new standards – especially with a clear focus on data protection, ease of use, and integration into the existing Apple ecosystem.
Ring-shaped design and long battery life
The planned camera will have a ring-shaped housing and be equipped with a battery that can last for several months to a year without recharging, depending on usage. This long operating time without a power connection could be a significant advantage, especially in larger homes or where flexible placement is required.
Functions beyond pure monitoring
Apple plans to use the camera not only as a traditional security device, but also as a sensor for home automation. It should be able to detect people, detect motion, and trigger actions in the smart home based on these. This will utilize facial recognition and infrared sensors. For example, the lights could be automatically turned off when no one is in the room, or music that a specific family member likes could be played as soon as they are recognized.
Integration with HomeKit and iCloud
The camera is designed to work fully with the Home app and HomeKit. HomeKit already supports third-party cameras, offering secure cloud storage via iCloud. The new Apple camera would seamlessly utilize these features and could thus be integrated into existing smart home environments without any additional effort.
Competition with established brands
In addition to the ring-shaped home surveillance camera, Apple is working on other home security products, according to Bloomberg. These include a smart doorbell that can unlock doors using facial recognition. With these developments, Apple is clearly positioning itself as a competitor to Amazon and Google, which currently hold strong market positions with Ring and Nest.
Apple aims for a strong entry into the smart home segment
Whether the camera will actually launch in 2026 alongside the new smart home hub or later remains to be seen. What is certain is that Apple is serious about expanding the smart home market. With a combination of innovative hardware, deep integration into its own ecosystem, and a clear focus on security, the company could quickly establish itself as a new force in home surveillance.
