Apple is working on a new Smart Home Hub, originally scheduled to launch in early 2025. However, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the launch has been delayed until mid-2026. This is due to difficulties developing an enhanced version of Siri based on large language models. The goal is to make the Hub a central control and information point for the entire household.
Apple's upcoming Smart Home Hub is intended to be more than just a speaker with a display. Planned is a device with a 7-inch screen, integrated speaker, facial recognition, and a specially developed operating system. It carries the identifier J490 and will run on the new platform, codenamed "Charismatic." The focus is on use by multiple household members and a significantly more intelligent Siri that provides personalized content and features.
Design and hardware
Visually, the Hub is reminiscent of a Google Nest Hub, but follows Apple's typical design language. It's square with thin black or white edges, rounded corners, and a semi-dome base, according to Gurman . The integrated speaker is designed to provide clear sound. A front-facing camera detects people as they approach and automatically adjusts content to their personal preferences.
The Charismatic operating system
Charismatic, as it's codenamed, is a new operating system that differs from iOS, macOS, and tvOS. It's specifically designed for multiple household members to use simultaneously. The interface relies on watch faces and widgets for Apple apps like Calendar, Camera, Music, Reminders, and Notes. There won't be a dedicated app store. Control is primarily via voice commands, but touch operation is also possible.
Siri with large language models
Siri plays a central role in the new Hub. Apple is working on a version based on large language models (LLMs) that can incorporate personal data to provide more personalized responses and features. Originally planned for iOS 18, this feature will now only be available with the enhanced version of Siri, which could be released as early as spring 2026. A further visual overhaul of Siri for iPhones and iPads is also planned, which could also be released in 2026. Apple is currently testing a Siri design similar to the Mac Finder icon.
Technical basis and partners
Apple is testing its own internal LLM version of Siri, but is also considering external solutions from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. A final decision on which model will be used has not yet been made. The combination of Charismatic and LLM-Siri also forms the basis for another Apple product: a tabletop robot expected to launch in 2027.
Apple focuses on quality over speed
With the Smart Home Hub and the enhanced version of Siri, Apple aims to redefine the smart home. The delay demonstrates that development is more complex than expected and that Apple is focusing on a mature product rather than a quick release. Those who rely on a centralized, intelligent control system within the Apple ecosystem should receive a decisive innovation with the new product starting in 2026. (Image: Shutterstock / zhu difeng)
