The next iPhone generation is about to be unveiled, and the rumor mill is in overdrive. Alongside the usual speculation about design, cameras, and software, there are now hints of an accessory feature that's receiving special attention. Cases are expected for the iPhone 17 with small eyelets for a lanyard. This could see Apple bring back a feature recently seen on the iPod touch and the AirPods Pro charging case.
The well-known, but not always accurate, leaker "Majin Bu" has sparked a stir with a short video. It shows an alleged "liquid silicone" case for a standard iPhone 17 model. Two small holes in the lower corners of the case are striking, through which a lanyard could be attached. Whether this is actually an official Apple product remains to be seen. However, the discussion demonstrates how seriously accessory details are now taken for new iPhone generations.
Video shows alleged iPhone 17 case
The shared clip shows a mock-up of the iPhone 17, recognizable by its dual rear cameras. The protective case is said to be made of a material known as "liquid silicone." Particularly eye-catching are the two eyelets in the lower left and right corners. These appear to be intended for a wrist strap that could securely hold the iPhone to the arm during activities or when taking photos. The strap likely wouldn't come directly from Apple, but rather from a third-party supplier.
Apple and lanyards: Not a new idea
The concept wouldn't be entirely new. The charging case for the AirPods Pro 2 already has a cutout for a lanyard. Apple doesn't offer an official lanyard itself, but sells various versions from other manufacturers in its own store. The fifth-generation iPod touch dates back even further. This model featured a built-in mechanism for a lanyard that worked without an additional case. With the cases for the iPhone 17, Apple could therefore be using a familiar solution.
Connection with iOS 26
The name "Liquid Silicone" raises questions. It's possible that it's based on the so-called "Liquid Glass" design of iOS 26. Whether this is an official product name or just a temporary designation remains unclear.
Impact on camera rumors
The cases could also refute another speculation. In recent months, there has been repeated talk of a possible second camera control for the iPhone 17. However, since the case doesn't reveal any additional cutouts, this rumor now seems less likely.
Origin of the covers remains open
It hasn't yet been confirmed whether the protective cases shown are actually from Apple. It's equally conceivable that Beats or another accessory provider is behind the product. What is certain is that the final resolution won't be long in coming. Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 17 in less than a month.
iPhone 17: Accessory details move more into the foreground
The discussion surrounding the "Liquid Silicone" cases shows that the iPhone 17 isn't just about the hardware. Even small accessory details like the option for a lanyard can generate considerable interest. Whether Apple will actually offer this feature remains unclear. However, the video from leaker "Majin Bu" once again demonstrated how eagerly awaited every detail surrounding the next iPhone generation is. (Image: zellzoi / X)
