The AirPods Max have been on the market since late 2020 and have rounded out Apple's headphone lineup. With their mix of aluminum, stainless steel, and elegant design, they were intended to shine as a premium over-ear version alongside the AirPods and AirPods Pro. However, since their launch, the expectations of many fans have not truly been met.
The launch of the AirPods Max was eagerly anticipated, but disappointment set in shortly after their market launch. The weight, high price, and few real innovations caused mixed reactions. A redesign followed last year, but this too was minimal. Now, a recent report by Mark Gurman in the "Power On" newsletter has clarified the situation: A truly new model isn't planned anytime soon.
Hardly any changes since 2020
Since their launch almost five years ago, Apple has barely changed anything about the AirPods Max. The only notable updates last year were the introduction of a USB-C port and new color options. This primarily fulfilled Apple's EU regulations calling for a uniform charging standard. Technically, however, the headphones remained largely unchanged and lagged significantly behind the more modern AirPods Pro 2.
Interim assessment: A product caught between two stools
According to Gurman's assessment, the AirPods Max are in a strange position. They're selling well enough to keep Apple from discontinuing them. At the same time, however, their sales figures aren't so convincing that Apple would invest significant resources in a second generation. For the company's audio team, it currently makes more sense to push ahead with the development of new AirPods earbuds or integrate speakers into other products. This strategy also explains why the AirPods Max have remained virtually unchanged for five years. Those hoping for innovations like a lighter design, improved battery life, or new audio features will likely have to wait even longer.
Buy or wait?
According to Gurman, a new model isn't on the horizon, and anyone currently interested will have to make do with the existing version. The AirPods Max are still available in stores, for example, at Amazon for around €512 . Despite the lack of technical innovations, they offer powerful sound, seamless integration with Apple's device portfolio, and high-quality workmanship. However, the Beats Studio Pro are a compelling alternative. For around €259, these also offer many Apple features, such as 3D audio and easy connection to an iPhone or Mac. The lighter over-ear design also makes them more suitable for everyday use and more comfortable to wear for extended periods.
AirPods Max: Between Constancy and Stagnation
The AirPods Max remain a special case in Apple's portfolio. They're too established to be discontinued, but not strong enough to trigger any real development. Anyone who buys a pair now will get solid premium headphones with all the usual advantages and disadvantages.
