Tim Cook in Beijing: Trump Delegation with Musk and Wall Street Leaders

Tim Cook is back in China – this time not as Apple CEO on a business trip, but as part of a high-profile U.S. business delegation accompanying Donald Trump on his three-day state visit to Beijing. Also on board: Elon Musk and the heads of BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, Boeing, Meta, and Qualcomm. It's the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to China in nine years.

The trip runs from May 13 to 15, 2026, and is arguably the most politically significant signal toward Beijing of Trump's second term. For Apple, it's delicate on several fronts: Cook is officially not attending in his role as Apple CEO, but on a personal invitation from the White House. Back home, John Ternus, who will take over the CEO role on September 1, 2026, is minding the Apple store. According to reports, Cook did not travel on Air Force One, but arrived in time for the welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where he was filmed alongside Elon Musk.

The Delegation

Trump has brought along around a dozen senior U.S. business leaders on his trip. The list reads like a cross-section of the companies most relevant to U.S.-China relations – financial services, semiconductor manufacturers, aerospace, AI providers, and consumer technology. The following are joining him in Beijing:

  • BlackRock, Larry Fink
  • Blackstone, Stephen Schwarzman
  • Boeing, Kelly Ortberg
  • Cargill, Brian Sikes
  • Citi, Jane Fraser
  • Coherent, Jim Anderson
  • GE Aerospace, Larry Culp
  • Goldman Sachs, David Solomon
  • Illumina, Jacob Thaysen
  • Mastercard, Michael Miebach
  • Meta, Dina Powell McCormick
  • Micron, Sanjay Mehrotra
  • Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon
  • Tesla, Elon Musk
  • Visa, Ryan McInerney
  • Apple, Tim Cook

According to reports, the White House's official agenda includes trade relations, exports, AI cooperation, and the war with Iran. China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated that the country is ready to work with the United States in the spirit of "equality, respect, and mutual benefit."

Why Cook Joins the Trip Anyway

Declining an invitation from Trump has cost Apple dearly in the past. Cook once tried to skip a trip with the president – the response was a noticeable tariff hike against Apple. Trump himself plays this dynamic openly: on his own social media platform, he wrote that Cook calls him regularly and that he helps him – "but not always, because on occasion he will be too aggressive in his ask."

Cook has accordingly made several public efforts to court the president. At Trump's direction, he dined with the Saudi Crown Prince at the White House, met the president in person in Tokyo, and encountered King Charles during the latter's state visit to the United States. For Trump's inauguration, Cook personally donated one million dollars. Apple was also among the companies that contributed to financing the new White House ballroom – a project that, according to Trump's original statement in 2025, was to be entirely privately funded and to cost around 300 million dollars. By May 2026, the price was estimated at one billion dollars, with U.S. taxpayers expected to ultimately cover it.

On top of that, Cook presented Trump with a gold trophy at a White House reception and praised him there as well as at dinners. The diplomatic line is clear: Cook is working to keep Apple out of the political line of fire – and the China trip fits seamlessly into that pattern.

Tricky Constellations Within the Delegation

The makeup of the delegation is not without friction. Cook and Musk have their own history. There have been trivial lawsuits around Grok, old disputes over satellite communications – and in 2021, reports claimed that Musk wanted to replace Cook as Apple CEO to take the position himself. There has also been friction between Apple and Goldman Sachs: the Apple Card partnership ended on a sour note. Nevertheless, representatives of all three parties are now sitting with Trump in the same plane and at the same ceremony.

What Cook Can Realistically Achieve in Beijing

Officially, the delegation is meant to advance business deals. For Apple, the trip is primarily a political statement – not a concrete deal. China remains Apple's most important production location, while at the same time the market has become difficult for Apple in recent quarters. Sitting in the front row at a meeting with Xi Jinping in Trump's presence has two clear effects for Cook: it signals loyalty to the White House and continuity to Beijing's leadership. Both are worth more than any single trade agreement.

Cook's Final Major China Mission as CEO

This trip falls into an unusual phase: Cook has already announced his step-down as CEO and stated at a town hall in the Steve Jobs Theater that as Executive Chairman, he will particularly focus on cultivating relationships with governments around the world. The Beijing trip is thus effectively a dress rehearsal for his future main role. It is quite possible that Cook prefers this role over operational corporate leadership anyway – and that Apple under Ternus will deliberately continue to have Cook himself tend to its geopolitical legacy. Anyone tracing Cook's political lobbying of recent years will see this China trip less as a break than as the next logical step in a strategy he has perfected since Trump's first term.

Results Expected Only After Trump's Return

Concrete results from the trip are likely to become known only after Trump's return to the United States. Press conferences, joint statements from Trump and Xi, and possible trade agreements are expected in the next 48 hours. For Apple observers, the key question is whether new investment commitments, supply chain assurances, or tariff concessions will follow the trip – and whether Cook will be visibly credited for them.

Diplomacy as an Apple Discipline

The Beijing trip once again makes clear how deeply Cook's Apple is embedded in Washington's geopolitical routines. While Ternus prepares the handover in Cupertino, Cook is already taking on the role that will permanently define him after September 1: Apple ambassador between the world's largest economies. Once the change at the top is complete, it will become clear how much of this diplomacy is tied to Cook personally – and how much of it transfers institutionally to Apple.
