Shrinking Season 4: Filming starts next week – premiere possible in early 2027

Shrinking Season 4 Apple TV

Waiting times between streaming seasons can often be lengthy, but the break for Apple's hit comedy Shrinking could be surprisingly short. Harrison Ford himself revealed in a Variety interview that filming for the fourth season begins next week. Twelve episodes are planned – more than the series has ever had.

The third season of Shrinking only ended in early April 2026 with a finale that concluded the originally planned three-season arc. Apple TV had already renewed the series for a fourth season in January 2026, coinciding with the start of season 3 – a clear sign of confidence in one of the streaming service's most successful comedies. The fact that filming is now starting just six weeks after the season 3 finale suggests an unusually short break until the next season.

What Harrison Ford revealed

In an interview with Variety – officially about his new whisky collaboration with Glenmorangie – Ford casually dropped the information: Filming for the fourth season starts next week. The number of episodes was also confirmed: 12 episodes are planned for season 4.

This also sets the upcoming season apart numerically from its predecessors. Season 1 had 10 episodes, season 2 also had 10, and season 3 was originally planned for 12 – but was reduced to 11 because the double premiere was combined into one episode. With 12 actual episodes, season 4 will therefore have the most extensive narrative scope that Shrinking has ever had.

Why an early 2027 premiere is realistic

For a comedy without elaborate special effects, the path from filming to release is generally shorter than for VFX-heavy series. If filming begins next week and wraps up in mid- to late 2026, a post-production phase spanning late summer and fall would be more than enough time to launch the fourth season on Apple TV in early 2027.

This also fits with the series' previous release pattern: Season 1 was released in January 2023, Season 2 in October 2024, and Season 3 in January 2026. A January 2027 slot would make logical programming choices for Apple TV and would restore the annual frequency that was interrupted between Seasons 1 and 2 by the writers' strike.

What season 4 promises in terms of content

Showrunner Bill Lawrence made it clear during the season 3 finale that the upcoming season would represent a deliberate break. In a Threads post, he spoke of a "new story" and a new chapter – the previous three-season concept revolving around grief, forgiveness, and moving on concluded with season 3. It has been confirmed that the core cast will remain: Jason Segel as therapist Jimmy, Harrison Ford as mentor Paul, as well as Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley.

The production team is remaining tight-lipped about the exact storyline. However, the reset aspect, which Lawrence himself hinted at, could lead to new characters and relationships – a pattern Apple TV has followed with several renewals in recent months, such as the latest season of The Morning Show.

Apple's comedy strategy is on a high level

The speed with which Apple TV is pursuing the next season speaks volumes about the importance of Shrinking. Multiple Emmy nominations, a Critics' Choice Award for Michael Urie, and consistently high critical acclaim have made the series a cornerstone of Apple TV's comedy lineup. In a period where Apple TV is aiming for programmatic growth under new leadership, such established franchises are among the most reliable growth drivers - alongside Ted Lasso, The Studio, and the recently renewed comedy Margo's Got Money Troubles.

The fact that Apple can make a comedy without elaborate special effects its flagship in-house production and retain actors of the caliber of Harrison Ford and Jason Segel shows how high the standards in the comedy field have become.

A second creative phase for shrinking

With 12 new episodes, a deliberate story reset, and a cast that remains consistent throughout, Shrinking enters a second creative phase. Apple's production speed - filming begins just six weeks after the season 3 finale - is the clearest indication: the series isn't just meant to be a three-season highlight, but a long-term fixture of Apple TV's comedy lineup.
