John Ternus is once again being considered as the next CEO of Apple

At Apple, one issue is increasingly taking center stage, one that has been in preparation internally for some time: the succession of Tim Cook. Cook recently turned 65. At the same time, several long-serving executives have already left Apple or are about to. Against this backdrop, discussions are intensifying about who could lead the company in the future. Several recent reports name John Ternus as the most likely candidate for the CEO position. A detailed profile in the New York Times now provides a more precise insight into his role, his strengths, and the open questions surrounding his potential future at Apple.

A leadership change at Apple is no ordinary personnel process. The CEO's role is inextricably linked to the company's strategic direction. Tim Cook stabilized Apple financially, perfected its supply chains, and led the company to become one of the most valuable in the world. The question is less about who can take over the position, but rather what kind of leadership Apple needs in its next phase. This is precisely where John Ternus becomes a pivotal figure.

Apple is pushing ahead with its succession planning

According to sources who spoke with the New York Times, Apple began more concrete planning for Tim Cook's successor last year. This was reportedly triggered by Cook's desire to gradually reduce his workload. While a complete departure is not imminent, various scenarios are apparently already being considered internally.

The assumption is that Cook will remain with the company and could potentially assume the chairmanship of the board of directors. This solution would ensure continuity while simultaneously creating space for new operational leadership.

Who was considered a possible CEO

Besides John Ternus, several other executives were named as potential successors. These include software chief Craig Federighi, services chief Eddy Cue, marketing chief Greg Joswiak, and retail and HR chief Deirdre O'Brien.

However, according to current assessments, John Ternus appears to have overtaken all other candidates. Internal observers currently see him as the favorite to succeed Tim Cook.

The role of John Ternus at Apple

John Ternus is Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering and thus responsible for one of Apple's most crucial areas. He is considered an experienced engineer and has worked on numerous Apple devices throughout his career. His expertise lies primarily in the further development of existing products and the technical implementation of complex hardware projects.

It has been noted critically that Ternus is less known for entirely new product categories. Furthermore, he has only limited experience in the political, strategic, and public relations tasks that are inextricably linked to the role of a CEO.

Critical voices from the surrounding area

A former Apple engineer, Cameron Rogers, spoke candidly about Ternus's leadership profile. He describes him as extremely likeable, approachable, and popular. Many enjoy working with him because he is considered reliable and pleasant. At the same time, Rogers questions whether Ternus has ever had to make difficult business decisions or independently resolve complex hardware crises.

This assessment is not shared by everyone internally, but it shows that Ternus is not without controversy.

Technological contributions and counterarguments

Supporters of John Ternus point out that he was indeed involved in innovative projects. These include work on the so-called iPhone Air and on an upcoming foldable iPhone, which is considered one of the most technically ambitious projects in Apple's current plans.

Ternus is also described as highly detail-oriented and possesses a deep understanding of Apple's supply chain. These very skills were considered crucial to Tim Cook's success at the helm of the company.

Apple between continuity and vision

The discussion surrounding John Ternus touches upon a fundamental question within Apple. Should the company continue to focus on stability, efficiency, and controlled development, or should it return to more visionary and risky decisions?

The comparison to Steve Jobs is obvious. While Jobs stood for radical ideas and disruptive products, Cook shaped Apple through operational strength. John Ternus would be more in line with this latter tradition. This is precisely what leads to differing opinions among Apple employees about what kind of leader is needed in the future.

The CEO question at Apple remains open despite the favorite

John Ternus is currently considered the most likely candidate to succeed Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. His technical expertise, calm demeanor, and extensive experience within the company speak in his favor. At the same time, questions remain, particularly regarding strategic leadership, public presence, and long-term vision.

Apple is apparently preparing carefully for the leadership change. Whether John Ternus will actually take this step depends not only on him personally, but also on the direction Apple wants to take in the coming years. (Image: Apple)
