ChatGPT in CarPlay: OpenAI brings AI chat to the car

OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT app with CarPlay support. This means the AI chatbot can now be used directly via voice commands on the vehicle's display – without even looking at your iPhone. Here's what the integration can do, what limitations exist, and what it means for the future of CarPlay.

Apple opens CarPlay to AI chatbots

With iOS 26.4, Apple introduced a new app category for CarPlay: so-called "voice-based conversational apps." This allows AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude to appear on the CarPlay dashboard for the first time. OpenAI is the first major provider to implement this new feature and has released an update for the ChatGPT app.

Previously, the list of allowed app categories in CarPlay was strictly limited. Audio apps, navigation apps, communication apps, EV charging apps, gas station apps, and a few other categories were permitted. There simply wasn't a suitable category for AI assistants – and therefore no way for them to appear on the CarPlay dashboard. This has fundamentally changed with iOS 26.4.

This is how ChatGPT works in CarPlay

The CarPlay version of ChatGPT relies entirely on voice interaction. Apple stipulates that chatbot apps may not display text or images in response to queries – after all, driver distraction should be kept to a minimum. Instead, apps must use an Apple-provided voice control template and display the voice control view while the service is active.

Specifically, this means that after opening the ChatGPT app on the CarPlay display, voice mode starts automatically. Questions can then be asked freely – from knowledge-based questions and explanations to creative inquiries. ChatGPT responds by voice, similar to the voice mode of the iPhone app. Apps can display up to four action buttons on the screen.

Limitations: No wake word and no vehicle control

Despite the new integration, there are some important limitations. A wake word like "Hey ChatGPT" doesn't exist – the app must first be opened manually via the CarPlay display. Only then can the voice dialogue be started. Therefore, ChatGPT does not replace Siri as the default assistant in CarPlay.

Furthermore, ChatGPT cannot control vehicle or iPhone functions. Air conditioning, windows, calls, and music can still only be controlled via Siri. ChatGPT is purely limited to information and conversation – not to controlling devices or vehicle systems.

Conditions for use

To use ChatGPT in CarPlay, the following requirements must be met:

  • An iPhone 11 or newer with iOS 26.4 or higher
  • The current version of the ChatGPT app from the App Store
  • A vehicle with CarPlay support (wired or wireless)

After the update, the ChatGPT icon will automatically appear next to the other CarPlay apps on the vehicle display.

Special entitlement from Apple required

Apple controls access to this new app category through a special entitlement. Developers must request the "com.apple.developer.carplay-voice-based-conversation" permission from Apple and implement it in their app before CarPlay integration is enabled. Apple therefore reserves the right to approve each individual app that wishes to use this feature.

This also explains why, despite its activation in iOS 26.4, only ChatGPT currently offers the feature. Google (Gemini) and Anthropic (Claude) have not yet updated their apps. However, it is expected that other AI providers will follow suit in the coming weeks.

ChatGPT in CarPlay: How useful is the AI assistant in the car really?

ChatGPT's CarPlay integration is a remarkable step forward – for both OpenAI and Apple. For the first time, drivers can use a fully functional AI chatbot directly in their car without having to reach for their iPhone. This can be especially practical on longer journeys: quickly clarifying a question, getting something explained, or discussing ideas – all via voice command.

At the same time, it remains to be seen how useful a purely voice-based chatbot, without the ability to read, scroll, or look up answers, will actually be in everyday life. ChatGPT's strength has traditionally lay in text-based communication. Whether the experience will be just as compelling on a purely voice basis remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Apple has opened the door – and OpenAI was the first to walk through it.
