Apple is working on a new feature that could significantly change how we use audio accessories. The AudioAccessoryKit framework is being used for the first time to test how automatic audio switching can be implemented for third-party devices. Until now, this feature has been primarily reserved for Apple's own accessories, such as AirPods.
This development is related to the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple is responding to regulatory requirements and gradually opening up key system functions to other manufacturers.
Automatic audio switching is one of the most convenient features in the Apple ecosystem. It ensures that audio sources switch between devices without manual intervention. This same behavior will soon be possible with third-party accessories as well.
Apple has confirmed in a support document that manufacturers will soon be able to share headphone data with the system. This will allow iOS to detect whether a device is being worn and route audio accordingly. Currently, however, this feature is still in a limited testing phase.
Apple opens up audio features to third-party providers
With AudioAccessoryKit, Apple is enabling deeper integration of audio accessories for the first time. Manufacturers can integrate their devices in such a way that iOS receives information about their usage.
In practice, this means that when compatible headphones are put on, the system can automatically route the sound to them. When they are removed, iOS reacts accordingly and adjusts the audio output.
Technical Implementation Overview
Several steps are necessary for the function to work:
- Accessories are paired via AccessorySetupKit.
- Registration with AudioAccessoryKit then follows.
- Manufacturers specify which functions are supported, such as:
• Automatic audio switching
• Position detection
The accompanying app for the accessory plays a key role. It reports events such as putting on or taking off the headphones to the system. Only then can iOS correctly control the audio output.
Additionally, Bluetooth devices can indicate which devices they are connected to. This helps in selecting the right audio source, especially when multiple devices are used simultaneously.
Restrictions and Availability
The feature is not yet available to everyone. Apple cites several limitations:
- Only for iPhone and iPad
- Compatible with iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 or later
- Usage only within the EU and with an Apple account from the EU.
- Currently only for development and testing, not available in the App Store
A later release via App Store, TestFlight and alternative distribution channels is planned.
Apple is further opening up its audio ecosystem
Apple is testing AudioAccessoryKit, a significant expansion of its system. Automatic audio switching for third-party devices brings previously exclusive features to a more open environment. Currently limited to developers and the EU, this feature suggests a much stronger integration of third-party accessories into the Apple ecosystem in the long term.
