Apple Intelligence briefly appeared in China without authorization

Apple Intelligence is a key component of Apple's AI strategy. However, its introduction, particularly in the important Chinese market, is subject to special conditions. A recent incident illustrates just how complicated this process is.

According to Bloomberg, Apple's intelligence features briefly appeared for some iPhone users in China. The features were visible in the settings, despite no official announcement. They disappeared shortly afterward. The incident is considered a technical glitch.

Accidental activation

Apple had not planned a launch. Several factors support this: the activation occurred at unusual times, and some of the features use services like Google Image Search, which are blocked in China. A regular launch would not have been possible under these circumstances.

Regulatory hurdles

A major problem for Apple Intelligence in China is the strict regulation. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) must review and approve all AI models. No service can launch without approval, which repeatedly leads to delays.

Collaboration with Alibaba

Apple is working with Alibaba to meet the requirements. The goal is to adapt the AI locally and obtain approval. However, a concrete launch date remains unclear.

Competitive pressure

While Apple waits, manufacturers like Huawei and Xiaomi are already further ahead. They offer many AI functions and thus gain an advantage in the market.

Apple Intelligence and the hurdles of the Chinese market

The Apple Intelligence incident illustrates how difficult it is to enter the Chinese market. Despite progress, Apple remains dependent on regulatory approvals, while its competitors have already taken the lead. (Image: Shutterstock / PixieMe)
