WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will significantly change how the app is used in cars. The current beta version is testing native CarPlay integration for the first time. This takes the messenger a step beyond its previously very limited use in vehicles.

The previous integration of WhatsApp into Apple CarPlay was functional, but severely limited. Users could essentially only interact with the app via voice commands. A separate user interface was completely lacking.

The new beta version suggests a more comprehensive solution is on the horizon. This extension is being developed by Meta, the company behind WhatsApp. Initial details come from analyses by the platform WABetaInfo, which regularly documents new features in test versions.

Current status of WhatsApp usage in CarPlay

Currently, WhatsApp integration in CarPlay is limited to the Siri voice assistant. When the app is opened in the vehicle, no separate interface appears. Instead, Siri is activated.

This allows two key functions to be used:

  • Composing and sending messages using voice.
  • Starting voice calls

Visual navigation within the app is currently not possible. Chats, contact lists, or call histories cannot be viewed directly.

New native CarPlay app in beta

With the latest beta version, currently available via TestFlight, WhatsApp is introducing its own user interface for CarPlay for the first time. This new interface significantly expands the usage possibilities and reduces reliance on voice control alone.

After launching the app via the CarPlay launcher, a separate screen appears. This screen contains a structured overview of the most important functions.

Chat list with restricted display

A key component of the new interface is the chat overview. This displays current conversations, typically from the last 20 to 25 days.

One important limitation is:

  • Individual chats cannot be opened.
  • The full chat history is not visible.

This limitation was intentionally implemented. It is designed to prevent reading longer texts while driving, which would pose a safety risk. A smartphone remains necessary for full conversations.

Extended contact information

In addition to the chat overview, a new view for contact information is being introduced. This allows users to access profile details of individual contacts.

This makes it easier to navigate within the app and provides more context for saved contacts without having to switch to the smartphone.

Call history directly in the vehicle

Another new feature is the call history display. Here, recent calls are clearly presented.

A distinction is made between:

  • incoming calls
  • outgoing calls
  • missed calls

This function ensures that communication histories remain traceable even in the car.

Favorite contacts for quick access

The new CarPlay app also includes a dedicated section for favorite contacts. This tab allows quick access to frequently used contacts.

This function is particularly relevant in vehicles, as it simplifies access and reduces additional steps.

Availability of the function

The new CarPlay integration is currently in a testing phase. It is only available to a limited number of users participating in the beta via TestFlight.

There is currently no concrete release date for all users. It is also unclear whether all currently tested features will be implemented unchanged. As is typical with beta versions, adjustments may still be made, or individual features may be removed or added.

WhatsApp is getting closer to being a fully-fledged CarPlay app

The planned native CarPlay app represents a significant advancement in the use of WhatsApp in cars. Instead of relying solely on voice commands, a visual interface will be introduced, making key functions accessible.

Despite the expansions, the focus remains clearly on safety. Restrictions such as not displaying complete chat histories show that the use of the app in road traffic will continue to be monitored.

Should the feature be released in this form, the use of WhatsApp in cars is likely to change noticeably. The app would then be functionally closer to other CarPlay applications and expand its use in everyday mobile life. (Image: Shutterstock / Samuel Boivin)
