There's news for fans of the Apple TV+ series Severance: In addition to the confirmed third season, two possible spinoff series are also in the works. Director and producer Ben Stiller revealed this in an interview. The ideas are still in their early stages, but the plans are concrete enough to attract attention.
With its unusual premise and cool, stylized look, Severance quickly built a loyal fan base. The story centered around the company Lumon Industries and the separation of professional and private life caused by a medical procedure not only created suspense but also raised social questions. It's therefore hardly surprising that Apple TV+ is considering expanding the series' universe.
Two concrete spinoff ideas confirmed
In a new article in industry magazine Variety , two key creative figures from Severance speak out: Ben Stiller and lead actor Adam Scott. Stiller makes a clear statement that's causing quite a stir. When asked whether he sees Severance as a franchise with potential spin-off series, he replies:
There are two concrete ideas—which I won't reveal to you—that we've discussed internally as possible spinoff ideas.
Stiller declined to go into further details. Whether Apple is already officially involved in the development remains open. According to him, the projects are in an early stage of development. Stiller declined to answer further questions about Season 3 of the main series or other aspects of the planning in the interview.
Spinoffs are not a new concept at Apple TV+
The idea of expanding Severance with additional series fits Apple TV+'s current strategy. The streaming service has already built other series universes. Mythic Quest, for example, gave rise to the short anthology series Side Quest. For All Mankind will also soon have its own spinoff. The decision to focus on spinoffs follows a clear pattern: If a series has a sufficiently strong world and is well-marketed, building a franchise is a logical consequence. In the case of Severance, there are many conceivable directions – from other departments within Lumon to the backstories of individual characters to entirely new settings that focus on the same technology or company structure.
Further information from the Variety interview
In addition to the statements about the spinoffs, the Variety interview contains a few additional details. For example, Ben Stiller mentions that he originally considered starring in the series himself. Ultimately, however, he decided to focus on directing and producing. It's also interesting that Stiller is remarkably open about the spinoff plans during the interview – while remaining much more reserved when asked about the third season of Severance. This suggests that talks about possible new series are serious, even if there hasn't been an official announcement yet.
What you can expect as a viewer
Even though the specific content of the potential spinoffs hasn't been announced yet, one thing is clear: Severance's creative team is actively working on the series' future. If you find the world of Lumon fascinating and want to learn more about the universe, new formats could await you in the coming years. Severance is currently available exclusively on Apple TV+. The service costs €9.99 per month and, in addition to Severance, also offers other series such as Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Silo, and Shrinking.
Future of Severance: More than just season 3?
Severance remains a core project at Apple TV+ and may be on the verge of a major expansion. According to Ben Stiller, two spinoff ideas are being discussed, although there's no official information yet regarding the plot or release date. One thing is clear, though: there's interest in expanding the series' universe—both among audiences and the production team. If you want to know what happens next, it's worth keeping an eye on Severance. (Image: Apple)
