The iPhone 17 brings noticeable changes – especially to the most affordable model. Apple plans to not only make the standard model slightly larger, but also give it technical features previously reserved for the more expensive Pro versions. This particularly applies to the display. For anyone looking to buy an iPhone without immediately going for the top-of-the-line model, the iPhone 17 could be particularly interesting this year.
In recent years, Apple has clearly differentiated its Pro models from the rest of the iPhone lineup. The difference was particularly noticeable in the displays: higher refresh rates, always-on functionality, and sometimes larger screens. With the iPhone 16, for example, only the Pro and Pro Max received slightly larger displays. The base model remained unchanged. With the iPhone 17, this changes for the first time.
iPhone 17 gets bigger
According to well-known analyst Ross Young, the iPhone 17 will have a slightly larger display. Instead of the current 6.1 inches, it will now measure 6.27 inches. This will put it on par with the iPhone 17 Pro. The difference seems small on paper, but in everyday use it results in a visibly larger screen bezel and more space for content. The design should also appear more modern and less compact – a feature that is important to many users.
120 Hz and ProMotion finally in the standard model
One of the biggest changes concerns the refresh rate. For the first time, Apple is bringing its ProMotion technology to the base model. The iPhone 17 is expected to have a 120 Hz refresh rate. Previously, this feature was reserved only for the Pro models.
- For you, this means significantly smoother scrolling and better animations, especially when browsing, gaming, or multitasking. The interface feels faster and more direct—a big step forward for the standard iPhone.
Always-on display included
The Always-On Display is also expected to be available on the iPhone 17. This feature allows certain content, such as the time or notifications, to be permanently visible without having to activate the device. This saves time – and has so far only been available on the Pro models.
iPhone 17 Air replaces the Plus model
In addition to the technical changes, the model structure is also changing. The iPhone Plus will no longer be available. It will be replaced by a new model called the iPhone 17 Air. One thing is clear: the regular iPhone 17 will remain as the standard model in the range. And it will be more upgraded than ever before.
iPhone 17: The standard model becomes an insider tip
With the iPhone 17, Apple is bringing many innovations to the base model. A larger display, 120 Hz ProMotion, and Always-On Display – these are features that were previously exclusive to the more expensive models. These changes make the iPhone 17 significantly more attractive to many, especially for those who don't need a Pro model but don't want to miss out on modern features. If you're planning on getting a new iPhone without immediately going for the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 offers a good overall package. And that's exactly what could make the difference this year.
