Apple could soon introduce a new top-of-the-line model in its iPhone lineup. For years, there have been hints that an iPhone Ultra is in the works. Now, there are increasing signs that this device is actually coming and will possibly replace the iPhone Pro Max at the top of the range. Apple has used the Ultra label repeatedly in recent years, recently more frequently than ever. This suggests that something is about to change with the iPhone as well.
The term "Ultra" is still relatively new to Apple. The company officially used it for the first time in 2022 – with the M1 Ultra chip. Since then, the name has appeared more and more frequently. The Ultra designation now stands for Apple's most powerful and exclusive products. After chips and smartwatches, the iPhone could be next. Although there hasn't been an official statement from Apple yet, many observers now consider the iPhone Ultra a logical development.
How Apple established the Ultra label
Apple first used the term Ultra with the M1 Ultra – a more powerful chip that was even superior to the M1 Max. The Max name had previously been the maximum, but Apple took it up a notch with Ultra. This was followed in the same year by the Apple Watch Ultra – a robust, significantly larger, and technically advanced version of the Apple Watch. The following year came the M2 Ultra for Macs and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Apple specifically used Ultra to mark the new upper class within its product lines. And in May of this year, things went even further: Apple introduced what it called CarPlay Ultra – the new version of its in-house car operating system. At the same time, it was announced that Apple was working with car manufacturer Aston Martin to integrate CarPlay Ultra into its vehicles. Aston Martin is in the premium segment – which fits with the Ultra focus.
What is known about a possible iPhone Ultra
As early as 2022, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote that Apple was considering replacing the Pro Max iPhone with an Ultra model. At the time, he predicted this might happen with the iPhone 15. The iPhone 15 did arrive, but without the Ultra. Nevertheless, speculation persists that Apple is only one or two generations away from releasing an iPhone Ultra. The current rumor mill is talking about the iPhone 17. Apple could allegedly redesign the naming structure of iPhones with this model. The following classification is conceivable:
- iPhone 17
- iPhone 17 Air
- iPhone 17 Pro
- iPhone 17 Ultra
Apple has rarely changed the naming structure of the iPhone in the past. Nevertheless, now would be a good time: The names for the MacBook and iPad are now much clearer and more consistent. The iPhone could adapt to this.
Why an iPhone Ultra makes sense
Technically, there are fewer and fewer differences between the Pro and the Pro Max. Both models have similar displays, similar cameras, and similar chips. An Ultra model would give Apple more flexibility – for example, for hardware features that are only available in the Ultra model. Apple could also integrate exclusive features on the software side that are only unlocked there. At the same time, the company would standardize its naming structure. The Ultra label already stands for the highest performance in several product categories. It would only be logical to include the iPhone in this line.

An iPhone Ultra seems only a matter of time
There's currently no official iPhone Ultra. But Apple is using the Ultra branding more and more consistently – on chips, watches, software, and even in cars. If Apple continues on this path, an iPhone Ultra is only a matter of time. A launch with the iPhone 17 is possible. Perhaps Apple will then completely reorganize the model names. So far, this remains speculation. But given the developments of the last few years, it would no longer be a surprise if the iPhone Ultra soon becomes a reality. Looking for new accessories?
