Apple has ventured into the world of AR/VR headsets with the Vision Pro. But a price of over 4,000 euros makes it unaffordable for most. Now there are reports of a cheaper Apple Vision headset that could be released as early as 2026. Below we summarize all known facts and speculations to give you a clear picture of what to expect.

The Vision Pro was a milestone but not affordable or necessary for everyone. Many users want a cheaper alternative that still offers the quality and design that we know from Apple. The big question is: How will Apple reduce costs without losing the appeal of the product? Here you can see what is possible and what compromises Apple is likely to make.

What we know about the cheaper headset

Schedule: When can we expect the product?

Rumors about the release date vary widely. Bloomberg reported that development work on a cheaper model is on track and that a market launch could be possible as early as 2025. However, well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo put this statement into perspective and spoke of a possible delay until 2027. According to the latest information, 2026 could be the most realistic date, as Apple has reportedly accelerated development.

Design: Materials and Weight

The Vision Pro is made of high-quality materials such as aluminum, which not only enhances the design but also drives up the price. A cheaper model will probably be made primarily of plastic. This lowers the cost and reduces the weight, which could increase wearing comfort - a point that has often been criticized with the Vision Pro.

Display: High quality but with compromises

The Vision Pro uses OLEDoS displays with a resolution of 3,660×3,200 pixels per eye. This technology delivers razor-sharp images but is extremely expensive to produce. For a more affordable model, Apple has reportedly requested samples of displays with about half the pixel density, in the range of 1,500 to 1,700 pixels per inch. This means less detail but still impressive image quality that meets Apple's standards.

EyeSight: Forgoing an expensive feature

EyeSight is one of the most striking features of the Vision Pro. It allows others to see your eyes while you're wearing the headset. However, this feature requires an additional display and is often perceived as less useful by users. Due to efforts to reduce manufacturing costs, it's very likely that this feature will not be available on the cheaper model.

Independence or iPhone pairing?

One interesting point is whether Apple will forego independent computing power in the cheaper headset and instead rely on a connection with the iPhone. This would further reduce manufacturing costs, as fewer powerful components would have to be built into the headset. However, this solution would be less convenient, which is why experts like Mark Gurman from Bloomberg rate this as "possible, but unlikely".

Price: What might it cost?

The Vision Pro currently costs more than 4,000 euros (3,500 US dollars), making it unaffordable for many. A cheaper model will probably cost between 1,500 and 2,000 US dollars. Experts agree that a price below 2,000 US dollars is crucial to appeal to a broader target group. In this country, the device is therefore unlikely to start at less than 2,000 euros - at least, it is currently very difficult to imagine.

A more affordable Apple Vision headset – without sacrificing quality?

A more affordable Apple Vision headset could become a reality in 2026. To lower the price, Apple will likely forgo aluminum and EyeSight, as well as reduce the display resolution. At the same time, core technology, such as OLEDoS displays, will be retained to ensure a high-quality user experience. The big question remains: Will Apple create a model that's more affordable without sacrificing Apple's trademark quality? The signs are good that Apple will find a way to attract a broad audience to its AR/VR technology. Now the question remains: Will you consider the more affordable headset?
