Apple has revamped the repair process for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip. Specifically, this involves replacing the battery, which was previously considered one of the most complex repair steps for this model. With a new procedure, a separately available battery module, and updated instructions, Apple has significantly lowered the barriers to repairs.
The repairability of modern notebooks has been criticized for years, especially for devices from the Apple ecosystem. The MacBook Pro, in particular, has suffered from complex internal designs that have made even simple repairs difficult. The newly introduced battery replacement process for the 14-inch model with the M5 chip demonstrates that Apple is further adapting its repair strategy and focusing more on modular solutions.
Battery replacement has so far been a major problem
When iFixit published its teardown of the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro in October, the biggest weakness quickly became apparent. The battery couldn't be replaced in isolation. Instead, several internal components had to be removed or replaced. This made battery replacement time-consuming, complicated, and prone to errors.
The teardown discusses the battery design starting at 1:28, with further technical details following from 5:14. A particular point of criticism was that the battery was not designed as a separate module but was deeply integrated into the rest of the hardware.
New process allows only the battery to be replaced
Apple has now addressed this issue. The new repair process requires only the removal of the lower case of the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5. No other internal modules need to be removed or disconnected. The battery itself is now a separate component that can be replaced independently of other parts.
This approach significantly reduces the workload and minimizes the risk of damaging other parts of the device when replacing the battery.
Battery now available individually in the Self Service Repair Store
In addition, Apple is selling the battery for the first time as a standalone module through its official Self Service Repair Store. All the necessary tools required to perform the repair according to Apple's specifications are also available there.
With this, Apple is targeting not only users who want to carry out repairs themselves, but also independent repair shops that rely on original spare parts and official procedures.
Updated repair manual published
Alongside the new battery module, Apple has released a new repair manual. This manual fully illustrates the simplified battery replacement process and includes detailed step-by-step instructions.
The instructions are intended for both DIY battery replacement and professional repair services, and describe Apple's official repair method precisely. This ensures that repairs can be carried out consistently and according to manufacturer specifications.
New battery replacement reduces repair costs for the MacBook Pro M5
With the new battery replacement process for the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5, Apple is responding to previous criticism regarding the device's repairability. The replacement is now limited to the battery itself, which is available as a separate module. Combined with the updated repair manual and the availability of services in the Self Service Repair Store, battery replacement is significantly easier and more accessible.
