Apple recently released several system updates, including iOS 26.2, iPadOS 26.2, and updates for other platforms. In comparison, visionOS 26.2 seemed rather unspectacular during its beta phase. New features appeared limited, and there were no major announcements. However, after its official release, it's clear that visionOS 26.2 brings a significant change, especially for using the Apple Vision Pro on the go.
visionOS is currently Apple's platform with the smallest user base. Nevertheless, it is continuously being developed. With visionOS 26 in early autumn, two long-awaited improvements were added: iPhone compatibility was noticeably improved and the Spatial Personas experience was significantly revamped. Further detailed improvements were also implemented, making everyday use of the Vision Pro more seamless.
visionOS 26.2 addresses this very issue. The update doesn't change the user experience in the living room or office, but significantly expands the range of applications for the Apple Vision Pro.
visionOS 26.2 and the enhanced travel mode
Travel mode is a key feature of visionOS for use on the go. Previously, this mode was limited to airplanes and trains. In these environments, the Apple Vision Pro could be used stably without any problems caused by movements in the surroundings.
With visionOS 26.2, this travel mode is expanded. According to Apple's official release notes, Apple Vision Pro can now be used not only on airplanes and trains, but also in cars and buses. This opens the platform to new use cases that were not officially planned before.
Use on the bus and everyday scenarios
Bus support is more of an addition than a core feature. It's questionable how many people will regularly put on the Vision Pro on their morning commute. Nevertheless, the expansion shows that Apple is no longer limiting travel mode to traditional long-distance journeys.
Especially in calmer driving situations, the Vision Pro can now theoretically also be used in buses without having to rely on unofficial workarounds.
The big step forward: Using Vision Pro in the car
Significantly more relevant is the release of travel mode for cars. As long as you're not driving yourself, this opens up practical use cases. Long road trips, extended Uber or taxi rides, or regular commuting as a passenger can now be meaningfully combined with the Vision Pro for the first time with visionOS 26.2.
In these situations, the Apple Vision Pro can be used for entertainment, media consumption, or productive tasks. This makes the device more flexible and brings it closer to the requirements of a mobile spatial computer.
Significance for the future of visionOS
The expansion of travel mode also makes sense with a view to future Apple products. Should Apple one day release lighter Apple Glasses, also based on visionOS, stable use on the go will be crucial. visionOS 26.2 provides an important foundation for this.
Until then, the current Apple Vision Pro already benefits. Its use outside the home and office is not only tolerated, but officially supported.
visionOS 26.2 expands the range of applications for the Apple Vision Pro
visionOS 26.2 isn't a major update with many visible new features. Instead, it brings a targeted improvement that changes the nature of the Apple Vision Pro. By extending travel mode to cars and buses, the headset becomes realistically usable on the go for the first time.
For certain use cases, especially as a passenger on longer journeys, visionOS 26.2 is a clear improvement. Apple is demonstrating that visionOS is not intended to remain limited to fixed locations in the long term, but will become increasingly mobile. Need helpful tips for your Apple Vision Pro?
