The AirPods Pro 3 haven't been on the market for long, but reports are already circulating about another model slated for release in 2026. This isn't a traditional successor, but rather an additional, higher-end variant. The focus is on a technical upgrade that could significantly expand the AirPods' functionality and integrate them more deeply into Apple's AI strategy.
The existing AirPods Pro 3 make a very solid impression after a short adjustment period. Initial fit issues can occur, but these often resolve themselves once the ears and earbuds have adjusted to each other. Afterward, they impress with clearly improved audio quality and even more effective active noise cancellation. Despite this already high level, Apple is apparently planning another hardware upgrade. This is not intended to replace the existing model, but rather to create an additional high-end option.
Another AirPods Pro 3 model with a premium focus
Rumors suggest Apple is working on a second version of the AirPods Pro 3, which will be clearly differentiated from the current model. This approach is reminiscent of the strategy used with the AirPods 4, which are offered both with and without active noise cancellation. The AirPods Pro 3 could also potentially have two variants in the future: a regular model, which is already available, and a more expensive model with additional hardware and expanded features.
Infrared cameras as a key hardware upgrade
The most important new feature is said to be integrated infrared cameras. These cameras are not intended for traditional photo or video recording. Instead, they capture environmental information that can be analyzed by AI systems. Apple analyst Mark Gurman reports that external cameras, in combination with artificial intelligence, should help to better understand the outside world and provide relevant information. The concept of Visual Intelligence is particularly emphasized. This technology could enable the AirPods to deliver context-related information, depending on the environment or the current situation. This would make the AirPods a more integral part of Apple's intelligence ecosystem.
Possible changes to the user interface
Besides the cameras, there are also hints of a new control method. Leaker Instant Digital has suggested that Apple might do away with the pressure-sensitive buttons on the earbud stems of the new model. Instead, hand gestures could be used for control. Alternatively, it's conceivable that Apple will offer both control methods simultaneously. This would make particular sense because more and more functions are being controlled directly via the AirPods stems. Which version will ultimately be implemented remains to be seen.
Technology, design and pricing
Aside from the new cameras and potential changes to the user interface, the new AirPods Pro 3 are expected to closely resemble the current model in terms of technology and design. Design, sound quality, and active noise cancellation are likely to remain at the same high level. However, the price is expected to be higher. The additional hardware and enhanced AI features clearly position the model in the premium segment.
AirPods Pro 3: A second model instead of a classic successor
The AirPods Pro 3 could see an unusual upgrade later this year. Instead of a traditional generational change, everything points to an additional high-end model that introduces new features without replacing the existing product. With infrared cameras, AI-powered visual intelligence, and potentially a new gesture control system, the AirPods Pro 3 would take things a step further than classic wireless headphones. Apple would once again demonstrate how powerfully audio hardware can be combined with artificial intelligence and context-aware features.
