Apple AI PIN: All the info on the new wearable

Apple is working on a new wearable device heavily reliant on artificial intelligence. The so-called Apple AI Pin is expected to be about the size of a small fitness tracker and can be worn as a pin or pendant. The goal is to develop an unobtrusive yet powerful AI wearable that works seamlessly with the iPhone and enriches everyday life with context-based information.

The development of the Apple AI Pin is still in its early stages. Nevertheless, there are already numerous concrete indications regarding its design, functions, and strategic direction. The focus is clearly not on creating a standalone device, but rather an extension of the existing Apple ecosystem. The combination of camera, artificial intelligence, and voice control is particularly central.

Design

The Apple AI Pin is expected to be roughly the size of an Apple AirTag. It will be a thin, round disc with a casing made of aluminum and glass. However, due to the integrated technology, the device will be slightly thicker than the AirTag.

There is a physical button on one side for control. Several wearing options are provided:

Attaches to clothing or bag via clip
Use as a pendant via an opening at the top, for example as a necklace

The device is charged wirelessly, similar to the Apple Watch.

Camera

The camera is a key component of Apple's AI Pin, however, there is conflicting information regarding its specific implementation.

One source describes a low-resolution camera that is permanently active. Its sole purpose is to analyze the environment and provide information. It is not intended to take photos or videos.

Another source suggests that two front cameras will be installed:

a standard camera
a wide-angle camera

In this case, taking photos and videos would also be possible.

Regardless of the exact hardware, it's clear that Apple is heavily relying on so-called visual intelligence. This involves using the camera to recognize objects, locations, and situations, and to provide context-related information.

Microphone and speaker

The Apple AI Pin will contain at least one microphone. This will be used to capture voice commands and record ambient sounds.

Whether a speaker will be integrated is currently undecided. If no speaker is included, audio output could be provided via connected devices.

Siri and AI functions

The AI Pin will be powered by a new version of Siri, expected to be introduced with iOS 27. Apple is working on a comprehensive upgrade to bring Siri up to par with modern AI systems.

External technologies also play a role. For example, Siri is said to be partially based on a version of Gemini. The goal is to be able to compete with solutions like ChatGPT.

Additionally, it can be assumed that all AI features already announced from iOS 18 will be included in iOS 27 – supplemented by further new features.

Dependence on the iPhone

The Apple AI Pin is not designed as a standalone device. Instead, it functions as an accessory for the iPhone.

Although a dedicated chip is used, it is more similar to the H2 chip in the AirPods and is not designed for complex calculations. The majority of the processing takes place directly on the iPhone.

Internally, the AI Pin is described as the iPhone's "eyes and ears." This underscores the device's role as a sensor and input extension.

Competition

Other companies are also working on similar concepts. The collaboration between OpenAI and former Apple designer Jony Ive is particularly relevant.

The planned device is also expected to offer AI functions and work with ChatGPT, but is not expected to be a wearable device, but rather a small, pocket-sized device.

Another example is the Humane AI Pin, which cost around $700 but failed in the market. One possible difference: This device was developed as a standalone solution, while Apple deliberately focuses on integration into the existing iPhone ecosystem.

More Apple AI wearables

In addition to the AI Pin, Apple is working on other wearable AI devices.

These include, among others:

AirPods with integrated infrared camera for environmental analysis
Smart glasses to compete with the Meta Ray-Ban

The planned glasses are intended to:

have a high-resolution camera system
You can take photos and videos
to have a second camera for analyzing environmental data
have no display in the glasses
heavily dependent on the next Siri generation

The development of the AirPods is already quite advanced. Rumours suggest that a version with a camera could be released very soon.

Release date

The Apple AI Pin is currently still in an early stage of development. It is possible that the project will be discontinued.

However, should Apple continue development, a possible market launch could take place in 2027.

Apple's AI Pin shows the direction in which wearable technology could develop. Instead of classic displays, the focus here is on the combination of artificial intelligence, sensors, and seamless integration into existing devices.
