With a recent update, WhatsApp has noticeably changed the interface of its iOS app. The familiar "Settings" tab has been replaced by a new profile section. This change is more than just a visual update: it aims to make the app more user-friendly and simultaneously prepares the way for an important feature that WhatsApp is already working on.
The first hints of the new tab appeared several weeks ago in the TestFlight beta. There, the "Settings" section was replaced by a tab labeled "You". The most noticeable change was that instead of a gear icon, the user's profile picture was displayed.
With version 16.5.10.73, WhatsApp has now officially confirmed this change. The rollout has begun, although not all users yet have access to the new features.
The new "You" tab replaces the settings
The classic "Settings" tab is disappearing and being replaced by the new Profile tab. This section brings together key functions: managing your account, controlling your identity, and customizing your profile.
Instead of a neutral symbol, the profile picture is used as the icon. This directly links the area to the user and makes it appear less technical than before.
Clear preparation for multiple accounts
A key reason for this change is the planned multi-account support. WhatsApp has been working on this feature for some time.
The profile picture in the tab makes it immediately clear which account is currently active. This becomes especially important when multiple accounts can be used simultaneously. The update therefore lays the foundation for future features.
This principle is not new: Instagram and Threads also use the profile picture to differentiate between accounts.
Revised profile page with cover image
In addition to the new tab, the profile page has also been redesigned. A large cover image now appears at the top, serving as a visual header and highlighting the profile. However, there are still some limitations:
- The cover image is currently predetermined.
- Customization is not yet possible.
- This feature is only available to a subset of users.
Personalization will therefore remain limited for now, but is likely to be expanded in future updates.
Availability still limited
As with many WhatsApp updates, the rollout is being done gradually. Although the feature has officially launched, not all iOS users have access to it yet.
Some features remain limited or only partially available. This is not unusual: previous changes, such as the "Liquid Glass" interface, were also rolled out slowly and have not yet reached all users.
WhatsApp is gearing towards multi-account usage
The WhatsApp update brings a clear structural change: The focus shifts from the classic settings menu to a personal profile area. At the same time, the app is being prepared for the use of multiple accounts.
Even though some features aren't fully available yet, the update clearly shows the direction WhatsApp is taking. The app is becoming more personal, user-friendly, and more focused on flexible account usage.
