Apple has introduced a new generation of its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2. This model expands upon the familiar design of the first AirPods Max with improved active noise cancellation, optimized sound quality, and several new smart features.
This is made possible primarily by the new H2 chip, which is used for the first time in the AirPods Max. In addition to classic music enjoyment, the headphones now also support new features for communication, gaming, and creative applications such as podcast production or music production.
The AirPods Max 2 are therefore among the most technologically advanced headphones in the Apple ecosystem.
Apple is increasingly developing its audio products into intelligent devices that not only reproduce sound but also actively react to the environment. The AirPods Max 2 are an example of this strategy.
The combination of hardware, software, and machine audio processing enables features that go beyond those of traditional headphones. These include automatic adjustment of noise cancellation, speech optimization during phone calls, and real-time translation during conversations.
The second generation of AirPods Max is therefore aimed at music lovers as well as creatives, gamers and users of the Apple ecosystem.
Introducing the AirPods Max 2
Apple has unveiled the AirPods Max 2. The headphones retain the familiar over-ear design, but enhance it with new technologies.
The central component is the H2 chip, which handles audio processing and enables several new functions. These include, among others:
- Adaptive Audio
- Conversation recognition
- Voice isolation
- Live translation
Additionally, the headphones support new features for content creators, such as studio-quality audio recording and remote camera control via the Digital Crown.
Improved Active Noise Cancellation
According to Apple, the active noise cancellation of the AirPods Max 2 works up to 1.5 times more effectively than the previous model.
New algorithms for computational audio analyze ambient noise more precisely and filter it out more effectively. Typical background noise such as airplane engines, train journeys, or traffic noise is thus significantly reduced.
In addition to noise cancellation, the transparency mode has also been redesigned. A new digital signal processing algorithm ensures that ambient sounds are reproduced more naturally and conversations sound more realistic.
Improved sound quality
The AirPods Max 2 feature a High Dynamic Range amplifier, which provides more precise and clearer audio playback.
The sound signature is essentially retained, but improved in several areas:
- More precise instrument localization in 3D audio
- more even bass reproduction
- more natural mids
- clearer highs
These improvements are particularly noticeable in music, movies, and spatial audio.
Support for lossless audio
The AirPods Max 2 support lossless audio at 24 bits and 48 kHz via the included USB-C cable.
This feature enables very high-quality audio transmission and is also suitable for professional applications. Musicians and producers can use the headphones while working in programs like Logic Pro.
A special feature is the support for personalized 3D audio with head tracking during production and mixing. This allows content to be created directly in spatial audio.
Improvements for Gaming
The AirPods Max 2 also benefit from the new audio architecture when gaming.
The reduced wireless latency ensures that games respond faster to audio. In game mode, this makes games on devices with iOS, macOS, and iPadOS feel more direct and immersive.
This mainly affects sound effects, reaction sounds, and the general audio delay during gameplay.
Intelligent functions
The AirPods Max 2 offer several new features that make everyday life easier or automatically adjust the listening experience.
- Adaptive Audio: Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts the balance between noise cancellation and transparency mode to the environment.
- Conversation detection: As soon as a conversation with a person begins, the function automatically reduces the playback volume and highlights voices.
- Voice isolation: During phone calls, voice isolation prioritizes the user's voice and blocks out background noise more effectively.
- Live translation: The Live Translation feature uses Apple Intelligence to facilitate conversations between different languages. It works with:
- AirPods Max 2
- AirPods Pro 2 or newer
- AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation
The requirement is an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone with iOS 26 or later.
Supported languages include:
- German
- English
- French
- Italian
- Spanish
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Japanese
- Korean
- Chinese (Simplified and Traditional)
This feature may not be available in all regions.
Camera remote control
The Digital Crown can be used to take photos or start and stop video recordings. It works with the camera app as well as compatible third-party apps on iPhone and iPad.
Studio-quality audio recordings
The AirPods Max 2 enable audio recordings with more natural voice reproduction. This feature is especially useful for podcasters, interviewers, and musicians.
Additional functions
Other features of the headphones include:
- automatic volume adjustment based on personal listening habits
- Reduction of very loud ambient noise
- Siri interactions through head movements (nodding or shaking the head)
These features are available when the headphones are connected to compatible Apple devices.

Sustainability and materials
The AirPods Max 2 are part of Apple's environmental strategy, Apple 2030, with which the company aims to become carbon neutral by the end of the decade. Several recycled materials are used to achieve this:
- 100% recycled rare earth metals in all magnets
- 100% recycled polyester in the ear cushions
- 100 % recycled solder and gold in the circuit board coatings
The packaging is entirely fiber-based and recyclable.
Price and availability
The AirPods Max 2 can be pre-ordered from March 25th in the US and more than 30 other countries via the Apple website and the Apple Store app.
Shipping begins at the start of the following month, coinciding with the launch of sales in Apple Stores. The price is €579.
New customers may be able to receive three months of free access to Apple Music upon purchase.
Apple also offers service options such as AppleCare+ or AppleCare One (in the US). These include, among other things, protection against damage from drops or liquids, battery replacement, and technical support.
AirPods Max 2: New features and technical improvements at a glance
The AirPods Max 2 expand Apple's over-ear headphones with several technical innovations. These include significantly improved noise cancellation, optimized sound quality, support for lossless audio, and new intelligent features.
With features such as live translation, adaptive audio, or studio-quality audio recording, the headphones cover a range of applications, from music and gaming to creative production.
At the same time, Apple is focusing more on sustainable materials and recyclable packaging. This positions the AirPods Max 2 as technologically advanced premium headphones within the Apple ecosystem. (Image: Apple)
