The iPhone 17e was only recently unveiled and immediately disassembled by iFixit. The focus wasn't just on the usual repair aspects, but also on potential differences from its predecessor. It quickly became apparent that while the device appears virtually unchanged externally, it offers some interesting internal details. Particularly noteworthy is an unexpected upgrade option for older models.
The iPhone 17e is positioned as a more affordable model within the current iPhone generation. Compared to the iPhone 16e, the design remains largely the same. Without a closer look, it would be difficult to discern what changes have actually been made.
Only through iFixit's teardown does it become clear where Apple has made adjustments. Besides technical advancements, these also focus on repairability and component compatibility.
MagSafe back as a key upgrade
The most noticeable new feature of the iPhone 17e is the integrated MagSafe back. This enables the use of MagSafe accessories and supports faster Qi charging than the iPhone 16e.
During disassembly, iFixit discovered that the back cover of the iPhone 17e is exactly the same size as that of the iPhone 16e. This means the two components are interchangeable. This leads to one concrete possibility:
The back cover of an iPhone 17e can be installed in an iPhone 16e to retrofit it with MagSafe. This offers practical advantages:
- Using MagSafe accessories
- Improved wireless charging options
- No complete device replacement necessary
At the same time, there are limitations:
- The iPhone 16e lacks the software to recognize MagSafe accessories.
- The corresponding animations are not displayed.
- It is unclear whether the maximum charging power of 15 watts will be achieved.
iFixit nevertheless rates this compatibility positively, highlighting that it facilitates repairs and makes spare parts more readily available.
Official repair support and setup
Apple is providing official repair manuals for the iPhone 17e right from the start. This makes it clear that both the front and back of the device can be removed. The internal design reveals:
- The battery can be replaced without having to remove the display.
- Adhesive will continue to be used.
- This adhesive can be released by an electrical impulse.
This solution simplifies battery replacement compared to traditional adhesive connections, but still requires an additional step.
Technical changes inside
In addition to MagSafe integration, there are other hardware updates in the iPhone 17e:
- Use of the new A19 chip instead of the A18
- Replacing the C1 modem with the faster C1X modem
- Increased base memory to 256 GB
These changes primarily affect performance, connectivity, and storage capacity.
High interchangeability of components
A key point in the teardown is the interchangeability of components. According to iFixit, many components are compatible between the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 16e. Specifically, this means:
- Internal components can largely be replaced.
- A mainboard from the iPhone 16e can be used in the iPhone 17e casing.
- No problems arise with component recognition.
The TrueDepth camera is an exception:
- Face ID does not work when the camera is swapped between devices.
Despite this limitation, general compatibility remains an important advantage for repairs and refurbishment.
Criticism: USB-C port
One negative aspect remains the accessibility of the USB-C port. According to iFixit:
- The connection is located deep inside the device.
- He is difficult to reach.
- This makes repairs more complicated, especially for less experienced users.
Apple has already improved this problem in higher-priced models, but has not adjusted it in the iPhone 17e.
Repair assessment
iFixit rates the iPhone 17e 7 out of 10 for repairability. This rating corresponds to:
- the iPhone 16e from last year
- as well as the current iPhone 17
The following were particularly positively considered:
- the interchangeability of the components
- the removable battery adhesive
- the dual-entry design
The accessibility of individual components, such as the USB-C port, remains a critical issue.
iPhone 17e improves details with effect
At first glance, the iPhone 17e shows few visible changes, but it features several significant improvements internally. The interchangeable MagSafe back cover, in particular, opens up new possibilities for existing devices.
The high compatibility with the iPhone 16e, the improved repair options, and the updated hardware make the device technically interesting. At the same time, known weaknesses remain, especially regarding the accessibility of individual components.
Overall, the product presents a picture of a device that has evolved in small but important ways, without fundamentally changing its concept. (Image: Shutterstock / Kaspars Grinvalds)
