iPhone 19e: Will 120Hz finally come to the entry-level iPhone?

The iPhone 19e is not expected to be released until early 2028, but it is already providing the first concrete hints of new technology. The focus is on a possible display upgrade that could significantly enhance the most affordable iPhone series.

Apple traditionally reserves important display features for its more expensive models. The 120Hz ProMotion technology, in particular, has not been available in the entry-level segment until now. This could change with the iPhone 19e, although nothing is certain yet.

LTPO display with 120 Hz possible

A report from ZDNet Korea suggests that the iPhone 19e could feature an LTPO OLED display. This type of display can dynamically adjust its refresh rate between 1 Hz and 120 Hz.

Apple already uses the same technology in the iPhone 17 series and the iPhone Air. For the "e" series, this would be a clear improvement.

Current status of the "e" models

The iPhone 17e uses a 60Hz LTPS TFT panel, and the upcoming iPhone 18e is expected to retain this feature. This currently puts Apple behind many Android devices in the same price range, which already offer 120Hz displays.

LTPO+ as a crucial factor

Its introduction in the iPhone 19e depends heavily on Apple's new LTPO+ technology (LTPO3). This is expected to be more efficient and consume less energy due to the wider use of oxide semiconductors.

Apple plans to initially use LTPO+ in high-end devices such as new iPhone Air models and a foldable iPhone. This could free up existing LTPO panels for more affordable models like the iPhone 19e.

Uncertainty regarding implementation

Whether that will actually happen is still uncertain. If the development of LTPO+ is delayed, the LTPO display in the iPhone 19e could also arrive later or be omitted altogether.

Apple's approach to new technologies

Apple often tests new display technologies first in smaller devices. LTPO+ was already introduced in the Apple Watch Series 10 in 2024, using panels from LG Display.

The original plan was to bring the technology into iPhones as early as 2027, but this plan has apparently been postponed because the technology is not yet ready for mass production.

iPhone 19e: 120 Hz as a possible turning point

The iPhone 19e could be the first Apple device to feature a 120Hz ProMotion display in its entry-level lineup. Technically, this would be a significant step towards catching up with the competition.

Whether the upgrade will be released depends heavily on the progress of LTPO+ technology. Therefore, the final specifications remain uncertain for now. (Image: Apple)
