Apple is lowering commission rates for developers in the App Store in China. Starting March 15, lower fees will apply to app sales and in-app purchases on iOS and iPadOS in mainland China. The changes affect several transaction types and were decided upon after discussions with Chinese regulators.
The App Store is a central platform for many developers to sell apps or offer digital content within apps. Apple charges a commission for these transactions. This fee structure is a frequent target of scrutiny from developers and regulatory bodies worldwide.
Apple is adjusting its terms and conditions in China. According to the company, the goal is to maintain a competitive and transparent app ecosystem while simultaneously responding to regulatory developments in the country.
New commission rates in the Chinese App Store
Apple announced the changes in a post on its developer blog. The company explains that adjustments are being made to the App Store for mainland China. The following new commission rates will apply from March 15th:
- 25 % commission for normal in-app purchases and paid app transactions (previously 30 %)
- 12 % Commission for certain in-app purchases within the App Store Small Business Program and the Mini Apps Partner Program, as well as for automatic renewals of subscriptions after the first year (previously 15 %)
Background to the change
Apple explains that the adjustments are the result of discussions with the Chinese regulatory authority. The company does not provide further details about the discussions.
Developers no longer need to sign the updated terms and conditions by March 15th to benefit from the new commission rates. The changes will take effect automatically from that date.
Apple is adjusting App Store rules for the Chinese market
Apple is responding to regulatory discussions in China by lowering its App Store commission. At the same time, the company aims to keep its app ecosystem attractive to developers.
Apple emphasizes that it wants to create conditions that are fair and transparent for developers, while also ensuring that App Store fees in China are no higher than the overall rates in other markets. (Image: Apple)
