Use iPhone AirDrop effectively

If you use an iPhone, you can use AirDrop to easily and quickly share photos, videos, links, or documents with other Apple devices. This works wirelessly via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and since iOS 17, even over the internet when the devices are far apart. Many people are familiar with AirDrop, but don't use it properly or don't utilize its full potential. Here are six tips on how to set up and use AirDrop efficiently with your iPhone – without unnecessary detours.

AirDrop is one of the most convenient features in the Apple ecosystem. No need to write emails, open messaging apps, or search for cables—just select, share, and you're done. Apple has made some changes with iOS 17: The visibility settings have already been revised, the Control Center interface has been modernized, and there's now the option to resume interrupted transfers over the internet. To ensure everything works smoothly, you should know the correct settings and avoid common sources of error. This article is about exactly that.

Enable AirDrop and set visibility

You can turn on AirDrop via the Control Center. On your iPhone, swipe down from the top right of the screen. Press and hold the area with the network icons (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode) until you see the AirDrop button. Tap it and select one of the three options:

  • Reception off: Your iPhone is not visible to anyone.
  • Contacts only: Only people in your contacts can send you something.
  • Everyone for 10 minutes: Your device is visible to everyone nearby – but only for 10 minutes.

The "10 Minutes" option replaces the previous permanent open option for everyone since iOS 16.2. This is useful if you only want to receive something briefly but don't want to be disturbed again afterward.

Configure contacts correctly

If you use "Contacts Only," your contacts must be set up correctly for AirDrop to work. It's important that you and the recipient both have the Apple account email address or phone number saved in their contacts that is also used for iCloud. You can check this in the Contacts app. If only the name is entered but no linked Apple ID, AirDrop won't be able to connect—even if you're within range. Simply saving someone by name isn't enough.

Range and conditions for a stable connection

AirDrop uses Bluetooth to search for devices and Wi-Fi for the actual file transfer. Both wireless connections must be enabled on both devices. For a stable connection, the devices should be within 10 meters of each other. Your iPhone must also be unlocked and the display turned on. If your iPhone is in sleep mode, your device may not appear for others. Thick walls, metal surfaces, or other sources of interference, such as strong Wi-Fi networks, can also affect the connection.

There is an important innovation since iOS 17: If you send a file via AirDrop and move away from the other device, the transfer will automatically continue over the internet. This is provided that:

  • both devices are connected to the same Apple ID or to iCloud
  • the "Use mobile data" option for AirDrop is enabled on both devices (Settings > General > AirDrop)
  • Mobile network or Wi-Fi is active

This makes AirDrop much more flexible, even when you're on the go.

Targeted restriction of reception

If you don't want to be disturbed—for example, at the movies, at the office, or simply in peace and quiet—you can quickly limit AirDrop reception. You can switch to "Reception off" or "Contacts only" at any time in the Control Center. "Everyone for 10 minutes" is suitable if you only want to receive something once, such as when meeting someone you haven't saved as a contact. After the time has elapsed, your device will automatically become invisible to strangers again.

Send files quickly – from any app

AirDrop is integrated directly into many iPhone apps. You can send photos, videos, PDFs, contacts, web pages, or notes. Simply open the app, select the file, and tap the share icon (a square with an up arrow). AirDrop will then appear as an option. Your iPhone will display all nearby Apple devices that have AirDrop enabled. Just tap the right device. You can also send multiple files at once—just hold down and select multiple items. If the connection is lost during the transfer, starting with iOS 18, the internet automatically takes over the rest of the transfer, provided all requirements are met.

Solve connection problems

If AirDrop isn't working for you, there could be several reasons. These steps usually help:

  • Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off and on again on both devices
  • Check if Personal Hotspot is disabled (it blocks AirDrop)
  • Unlock both iPhones and hold them close together
  • Restart if the problem persists
  • Check in Settings > General > AirDrop if the visibility is set correctly

If all else fails, an iOS update or resetting the network settings may be necessary.

AirDrop with iPhone: Fast, easy, reliable

AirDrop is a fast, easy, and secure way to share files with your iPhone. With iOS 17, the feature has become even more flexible – especially with Internet Resumption and revised visibility options. If you use the right settings and keep a few things in mind, AirDrop works reliably and saves you a lot of time in your everyday life. Just try it out – and share with a tap in the future.
