Apple remains true to its release schedule. Three years after the AirPods Pro 2, the third generation is now upon us. The first version launched in 2019, the successor followed in 2022, and now it's the turn of the AirPods Pro 3 in 2025. The schedule is right, and there are no surprises. Nevertheless, it's worth taking a closer look, because the next generation brings more than just a minor update.
Shortly before the upcoming Apple event, new information is circulating. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his usually reliable predictions, has revised his forecast for the market launch of the AirPods Pro 3. Just a few months ago, he expected a release no earlier than 2026. Now the word is: The devices are fully developed and should be released in the second half of 2025. The presentation is scheduled to take place during the iPhone event. This assessment is supported by reports from other sources, including Bloomberg. Apple appears to be working on another update in parallel, which could follow in 2026 – with significantly more extensive changes. One thing is already clear: The AirPods Pro 3 will not only be cosmetically revised, but will also undergo noticeable technical advancements.
What changes with the AirPods Pro 3
New audio chip and biometric functions
The most noticeable innovation is likely the new H3 chip. This is designed to deliver better sound quality, enable more stable connections, and improve energy efficiency. The upgrade from the H2 to the H3 should be particularly noticeable when paired with other Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Users can expect lower latency and overall smoother audio performance. A heart rate sensor is also planned—a feature previously more commonly found in sports headphones, such as the Powerbeats Pro 2. The integration of this sensor into the AirPods Pro 3 could open up new application possibilities, for example, in conjunction with Apple's Fitness app or Health app.
More compact charging case planned
A change is also planned for the charging case. According to current information, the case will be slightly smaller than the AirPods Pro 2. Whether this will result in a complete design overhaul or just minor adjustments remains to be seen. There are currently no indications of improved battery life or new features in the case itself.
Next model with camera in planning
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, another, significantly more ambitious AirPods model is planned for 2026. This one will be equipped with an infrared camera. The goal is closer integration with Apple's Vision Pro platform and future AR/VR devices. The camera could detect head movements or spatial orientation, thus enabling new input methods—for example, by combining gaze direction and audio feedback. Bloomberg has also reported on similar developments. Apple is reportedly already testing prototypes with integrated cameras. It's still unclear how advanced this technology is or whether it will actually end up in a consumer product. The only thing that is clear is that the direction goes well beyond traditional headphone functions.

AirPods Pro 3 as a logical development
With the AirPods Pro 3, Apple isn't pursuing a radical new beginning, but rather a planned update. The new audio chip, the addition of a heart rate sensor, and the more compact charging case bring concrete improvements in several areas. The focus is on performance, health, and everyday usability. In parallel, Apple is already working on a follow-up concept for 2026 that could bring significantly more technological innovations. Until then, the AirPods Pro 3 represent a sensible interim step with practical upgrades. If you missed the event, you can find the complete coverage directly on apfelpatient.de.
