Apple has released the fifth beta of iOS 27 for developers, continuing to refine the update that will fundamentally change millions of iPhones this fall. The focus remains on Siri AI – and this is precisely where a catch exists for users in Germany, one that this beta does not resolve.

The two-week release cycle continues: Following the fourth iOS 27 beta, Apple is releasing beta 5 as planned, bringing it a step closer to the final version. Since its launch at WWDC in June, the test versions have been released at short intervals; several more rounds will follow before the public launch in September. This phase focuses less on spectacular new features and more on stability, bug fixes, and fine-tuning.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Apple has released iOS 27 Beta 5 for developers; the public beta usually follows shortly after.
  • iOS 27 rests on three main focuses: the AI reboot with Siri AI, more parental controls, and continuous fine-tuning of speed and usability.
  • Siri AI is blocked on iPhone and iPad in the EU by the Digital Markets Act – Switzerland is exempt as a non-EU country.
  • The public release is planned for September, along with the new iPhones.
  • Betas should be installed on a secondary device with a prior backup, not on the main device.

Where iOS 27 stands in the beta cycle

With each beta, the focus shifts from new features to fine-tuning and stability. iOS 27 rests on three pillars: the completely revamped Siri AI assistant, expanded parental controls and screen time features, and broad optimizations of speed and usability across the entire system. Apple details the changes included in each beta version in the official iOS 27 release notes. The current phase is primarily about making this foundation robust.

Alongside the iOS 27 branch, Apple also updated its current operating system on the same day: iOS 26.6.1, iPadOS 26.6.1, and macOS Tahoe 26.6.2 were released as betas. They are only visible if the beta channel for iOS 26 is enabled – the update will not appear on a device already running iOS 27. The test versions do not include any new features; the focus is on security fixes. The expectation of such an interim update had been anticipated last week.

The DMA hook remains

For users in Germany and Austria, the most significant limitation remains even with Beta 5: Siri AI is blocked on iPhones and iPads in the EU due to the Digital Markets Act. The AI features that iOS 27 will offer this fall will initially be limited in these regions. Apple's restriction of the assistant is due to the interoperability requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Switzerland is on the other side: it belongs neither to the EU nor the EEA and is not covered by the DMA – Siri AI is available there. Swiss users are therefore already testing the AI functions in beta, while they are left out for the time being in the EU.

Who should install the beta now

Beta versions are intended for developers and experienced testers, not for everyday use. Bugs, noticeable battery drain, and occasional app instability are to be expected during this phase. Therefore, testing is only advisable on a secondary device and only after a full backup. Those without a developer account can access the test version via the public iOS 27 beta – the setup process, including backup and secondary device recommendations, is described there step by step.

Progress with the handbrake on

The fact that the betas are well-rounded and appearing frequently suggests a stable release this fall – that's the good news. However, the real test for users in the EU isn't the quality of the test version, but rather what aspects of the core AI functionality will actually be available at launch. As long as the DMA restriction remains in place, German and Austrian iPhones will encounter an iOS 27 this fall lacking a key AI feature – while it will be available in Switzerland from day one. Anyone planning to upgrade should factor this gap into their calculations and keep their expectations for the AI component low for the time being.

iOS 27: Here's what's next

Further rounds of testing will follow before Apple releases iOS 27 for all iPhones in September. The major elements – Siri AI, the expanded Apple Intelligence features, and the refinements to Liquid Glass – will remain consistent throughout the entire cycle. With each beta, the AI overhaul of the iPhone takes on a more concrete form. (Image: Apfelpatient)
