Apple TV is preparing to launch a long-delayed thriller series. Tehran, one of the streaming service's most popular international productions, returns with a new season after years of uncertainty. The third season premieres in January, and a fourth is already in production. This move puts Apple TV back in the spotlight for its thriller offerings and strengthens its overall series profile.
The new season of Tehran was originally ready for broadcast in 2023. However, due to political developments in the Middle East and the war between Israel and Hamas, Apple TV postponed the international release indefinitely. While the season aired in its entirety on the Israeli channel Kan 11 at the end of 2024, the worldwide release continued to await approval. With this latest announcement, Apple TV has now clarified the situation.
The third season of Tehran starts in January
The third season premieres on Friday, January 9th, on Apple TV. A single episode will be released for the premiere, followed by weekly episodes until February 27th. This maintains the established release schedule that Apple TV uses for many of its original productions.
The series is one of the longest-running thrillers on the platform. It tells the story of a Mossad agent working deep undercover in Tehran who repeatedly finds herself in life-threatening situations. Niv Sultan reprises her role as lead.

Hugh Laurie joins the cast
Apple TV has secured a well-known name for the new season. Hugh Laurie joins the cast, generating additional buzz. He joins the international cast that has been a hallmark of the show in previous seasons.
Reasons for the long delay
The third season was filmed back in 2023. However, the planned release was delayed after the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas. Apple TV postponed the international release indefinitely and remained silent on the situation for a long time. While viewers in Israel were able to watch the new episodes as early as December 2024, the worldwide release date remained uncertain until Apple TV recently announced a January premiere.

Fourth season already in production
Apple has confirmed in a press release that the fourth season of Tehran is already in production. Barring further delays, the next seasons are expected to be released in 2026 and 2027. This clearly indicates Apple TV's commitment to continuing the series.
Other thriller projects remain postponed
Alongside Tehran, another series is also causing delays. The Savant, starring Jessica Chastain, was scheduled to premiere on September 26th but was pulled from the schedule shortly before the date. To date, there is no new release date. However, the return of Tehran demonstrates that Apple TV is committed to its international thriller productions despite such postponements.
Apple TV remains a platform for high-quality series
Besides Tehran, Apple TV offers a wide range of successful series, including Ted Lasso, Severance, and Pluribus. The service costs €9.99 per month and is also available in the Apple One bundle. The first two seasons of Tehran are already available on Apple TV, providing a smooth transition to the third season.
