Apple TV: Sequel to "F1: The Movie" in the works

Apple continues to focus on major motorsport-related content and streaming. Following the box office success of "F1: The Movie", it's now officially confirmed that a sequel is in the works. This announcement doesn't come from a vague hint, but directly from the film's producer.

Apple had previously hinted that "F1: The Movie" might not be a one-off. Today, this has been confirmed: Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has told the BBC that a sequel is in the works.

The information comes from a conversation described by BBC writer Christal Hayes. Bruckheimer said at the annual Oscar luncheon in Los Angeles on Tuesday:

We are working on a sequel.

Official confirmation by Jerry Bruckheimer

Jerry Bruckheimer not only hinted at a sequel, but explicitly named it as an ongoing project. At the same time, he deliberately remained vague about the details.

  • There is no information yet on when the project will be released.
  • No details regarding the cast have been confirmed.
  • It also remained unclear whether Brad Pitt would be involved again.
  • Bruckheimer said, however, that he would "of course" be involved in the casting decisions.

Why the sequel is hardly surprising

A sequel makes sense when you consider the success of the first film. "F1: The Movie" wasn't just Apple's biggest box office hit to date; it's now also considered the highest-grossing sports film of all time. Given these circumstances, a sequel is a logical step for a studio.

Apple and Formula 1: Apple TV is becoming more important

This confirmation also aligns with Apple's broader involvement in the Formula 1 environment. Starting next month, F1 races in the US will be streamed on Apple TV. This will make Apple TV not only a platform for series and films, but also for live sports content with a wide reach.

Apple's cinema plans remain selective

The contrast between the box office success of "F1: The Movie" and Apple's usual release strategy is striking. Last week, Apple unveiled a whole host of new films slated for release this year, but none of them are announced as theatrical releases. All of them will instead premiere directly on Apple TV.

It seems that despite the success of "F1: The Movie," Apple continues to be very selective about which projects are truly planned and promoted for a major theatrical release. A theatrical release appears to remain the exception rather than the rule.

Price: How much does Apple TV cost?

Apple TV is available for €9.99 per month. Alternatively, the service is also available through the Apple One bundle, where it comes at a discount.

Apple further expands its F1 strategy around Apple TV

The situation is clear: The sequel to "F1: The Movie" is officially in production, confirmed by producer Jerry Bruckheimer in a BBC interview at the Oscars luncheon in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Specific details regarding the schedule or cast are not yet available, and Brad Pitt's return is also uncertain, while Bruckheimer intends to be involved in casting decisions.

Overall, this fits with Apple's strategy: motorsports are becoming more integrated with Apple TV, including F1 streaming in the US starting next month. At the same time, Apple is apparently remaining cautious about which films will actually be released in theaters, as all the recently announced new releases are intended for Apple TV.
