Apple TV has once again demonstrated its strong position in the international film and television industry at the 78th annual Directors Guild Awards. A total of three Apple productions received awards, including the comedy series "The Studio", the documentary series "Mr. Scorsese", and an Apple commercial. These awards add to a long list of successes that have consistently garnered Apple TV attention and recognition since its launch.
Since its launch on November 1, 2019, Apple TV has consistently pursued the concept of a streaming service with exclusively original content. Instead of focusing on quantity, the emphasis is on elaborately produced series, films, and documentaries featuring renowned creatives and high artistic standards. Recent awards at the Directors Guild Awards demonstrate that this approach is gaining sustained recognition not only from audiences but also from industry associations.
Three awards at the Directors Guild Awards
Apple received three awards at the 78th Directors Guild Awards:
- Outstanding directing in a comedy series: Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for the episode "The One" from The Studio
- Outstanding directing in a documentary series: Rebecca Miller for the episode "All This Filming Isn't Healthy" from Mr. Scorsese
- Outstanding direction in a commercial: Kim Gehrig for the Apple spot "I’m Not Remarkable"
These awards continue Apple's winning streak at the DGA Awards. Back in 2024, Apple was honored with the award for Best Director in a TV Movie or Miniseries for "Lessons in Chemistry".
"The Studio" as an award-winning comedy series
The Studio has quickly established itself as one of the most successful new comedy series. At the Emmy Awards, the show was honored with a total of 13 awards, including "Outstanding Comedy" and "Outstanding Lead Actor" for Seth Rogen. This makes it the most successful new comedy series in Emmy history.
In addition, The Studio received Golden Globe Awards for "Best Comedy" and "Best Actor in a Comedy" for Seth Rogen. At the Critics' Choice Awards, the series won the awards for Best Comedy Series, Best Actor in a Comedy Series (Seth Rogen), and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Ike Barinholtz). This makes The Studio one of the few series to have won a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and a Critics' Choice Award for Best Comedy.
Other accolades and nominations include an American Film Institute Award for TV Program of the Year, nominations for acting awards such as "Outstanding Ensemble", "Outstanding Male Actor" (Seth Rogen and Ike Barinholtz), and "Outstanding Female Actress" (Catherine O'Hara and Kathryn Hahn). Additional nominations come from the Producers Guild, the Casting Society Artios, the Art Directors Guild, the Costume Designers Guild, the American Society of Cinematographers, the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild, and the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
The Studio tells the story of Matt Remick, played by Seth Rogen, the new head of the struggling Continental Studios. As the film industry battles for relevance and economic survival, Remick and his management team try to balance creative vision, financial pressures, and personal insecurities. Every decision - from casting and marketing to awards ceremonies - can lead to success or professional disaster.
"Mr. Scorsese" as a documentary portrait
Mr. Scorsese has also established itself as a multi-award-winning documentary series. Prior to its success at the Directors Guild Awards, the series had already won Best Biographical Documentary and Best Limited Documentary Series at the Critics' Choice Documentary Awards. It also received nominations for the PGA Awards, the American Cinema Editors Awards, and the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards.
Directed by Rebecca Miller, this series is a comprehensive cinematic portrait of director Martin Scorsese. With unrestricted access to his private archives and based on extensive conversations with him, the documentary traces his extraordinary career and personal story. This is complemented by previously unreleased interviews with friends, family members, and creative collaborators such as Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Jay Cocks, and Rodrigo Prieto. His children, his wife Helen Morris, and close childhood friends also share their perspectives.
The series traces Scorsese's development from his student films at New York University to his current work. Central themes include morality, good and evil, and human nature, which run like a thread through his cinematic output.
Apple TV as a platform for original content
To date, Apple Originals have been honored with a total of 695 awards and 3,257 nominations. Among the most well-known successes, besides The Studio, are the multiple Emmy Award-winning series "Ted Lasso" and the Oscar-winning "CODA." This makes Apple TV one of the streaming services with the highest concentration of awards worldwide.
Apple TV is available through the Apple TV app in more than 100 countries and regions and can be used on over one billion devices. These include iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple TV 4K, Apple Vision Pro, smart TVs from various manufacturers, streaming devices such as Roku and Amazon Fire TV, game consoles, and access via a web browser at tv.apple.com. A subscription costs €9.99 per month and includes a seven-day free trial for new subscribers. Additionally, there are limited-time offers where Apple TV can be used for free for several months with the purchase of select Apple devices.
