Apple TV+ continues to expand its original lineup and has announced a new series based on Jennette McCurdy's memoir "I'm Glad My Mom Died." Jennifer Aniston will star in the lead role and also produce the project. Described as a dramedy, the series explores the complex relationship between a young actress and her controlling mother.
Since its launch in 2019, Apple TV+ has consistently focused on original content – with considerable success. Series such as "Ted Lasso," "The Morning Show," and "Bad Sisters" have received multiple awards. Now comes a new production based on one of the most discussed books of recent years. Jennette McCurdy's memoir caused a stir not only because of its provocative title, but also because of its candor in dealing with mental stress, control, and life as a child star. These very topics are now the focus of the new Apple TV+ series.
What the series is about
The series is based on McCurdy's book of the same name, which spent over 80 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The story sheds light on the emotional and psychological strain McCurdy experienced as a child actress under her domineering mother. The series fictionalizes this relationship: It centers on an 18-year-old actress who stars in a successful children's series and suffers under the control of her narcissistic mother. The mother, who basks in her role as "mom of a star," is played by Jennifer Aniston. It is a ten-part dramedy series. The script, production, and direction are by Jennette McCurdy herself and Ari Katcher, known from series such as "Ramy" and the "Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show."
Star-studded production team with strong Apple TV+ connection
Jennifer Aniston is not only a star, but also an executive producer through her company Echo Films. Also producing are Sharon Horgan and Stacy Greenberg for Merman, who already had success on Apple TV+ with the series "Bad Sisters." Other producers are Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara for LuckyChap, as well as Jerrod Carmichael and Erica Kay, who have worked on "Fosse/Verdon," "Pose" and "Dead Ringers," among others. The new series is part of an expanded collaboration between Apple TV+ and Jennifer Aniston. The actress has starred in the Apple Original series "The Morning Show" since 2019, which won an Emmy, a SAG Award and a Critics' Choice Award. The series' fourth season premieres on September 17th.

Apple TV+ also continues to work with Sharon Horgan and Merman. "Bad Sisters" won Best Drama Series at the BAFTAs. Actress Anne-Marie Duff won Best Supporting Actress. Both seasons of the series are currently available on Apple TV+.
