iOS 26: Beats and AirPods automatically pause when you sleep

With iOS 26, Apple is introducing a feature that's especially interesting for users who listen to music or podcasts through headphones before falling asleep. The new option detects when you've fallen asleep and automatically pauses playback. This not only saves battery life but also saves the last part of the song you were listening to. The feature is available for both AirPods and Beats headphones.

Many people drift off to sleep in the evening with music, an audiobook, or a podcast. The problem is that the headphones keep playing even when you've stopped listening. iOS 26 solves this problem with a practical new feature. The "Pause media while falling asleep" option ensures that your headphones turn off as soon as you fall asleep. This is useful, saves energy, and improves the listening experience.

New feature detects when you've fallen asleep

The new feature was introduced by Apple during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025. It was mentioned there as an AirPods feature, but a look at the code of the iOS 26 beta shows that it is also intended for Beats headphones. This was discovered by Steve Moser, a contributor to MacRumors . Apple did not explain how exactly it detects that you have fallen asleep. The system probably uses data from sensors in the headphones, such as motion or sound sensors, to determine whether you are still actively listening. As soon as you fall asleep, playback is paused. For audiobooks or podcasts, the last part of the song you were listening to is also saved so you can pick up where you left off the next day.

How to activate the function

If you install iOS 26, the new sleep feature should be enabled automatically. You can also enable it manually. To do so, connect your AirPods or Beats to your iPhone and tap the corresponding entry in Settings. There you'll find the option "Pause media when falling asleep." It's important that you have the appropriate firmware installed on your headphones in addition to iOS 26. Apple is currently testing this firmware internally. The feature is currently only available to developers, but a public beta version of iOS 26 is expected soon.

Availability of iOS 26

The final version of iOS 26 will be released to all users in September 2025. The feature will then be part of the regular update, provided your headphones are equipped with the latest firmware.

The new sleep feature in iOS 26 is practical and well-thought-out. It automatically detects when you've fallen asleep, pauses playback, and saves your position in the content. With this, Apple not only improves the comfort but also the energy efficiency of AirPods and Beats headphones. The feature is easy to use, but requires a current iOS version and a firmware update. Anyone who regularly falls asleep with headphones on should benefit significantly. (Image: Shutterstock / tamledesign213)
