With the AirPods Pro 3, Apple goes a step further and equips the charging case with the U2 chip for the first time. This innovation provides significantly improved location detection via the "Find My" app and takes the headphones to a new technical level. In particular, the location detection range has noticeably increased compared to the predecessor.
Apple has introduced a total of eight new features with the AirPods Pro 3. The charging case, which now houses the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, is particularly eye-catching. While Apple previously referred to it simply as an "Ultra Wideband chip," the company now uses the clear name U2 chip—a name that inevitably evokes memories of the free U2 album that landed in iTunes libraries without asking in 2014. Today, however, U2 at Apple stands for more precise technology and practical everyday use.
U2 chip replaces the U1 chip
The U1 chip was still integrated into the charging case of the AirPods Pro 2. With the switch to the U2 chip, the AirPods Pro 3 now have a range of up to 200 feet, or approximately 60 meters. This is three times the range of their predecessor. Misplaced or lost AirPods can now be located much more easily using the precision search function in the "Find My" app – whether in larger apartments, office buildings, or outdoors.
Technological basis
The U2 chip isn't a completely new component. It was introduced several years ago with the iPhone 15 models and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Its strength lies in precise and stable location tracking via ultra-wideband technology. Apple is committed to continuous development, which is gradually being integrated into more and more devices.
Perspective for other devices
The introduction of the U2 chip in the AirPods Pro 3 is just one part of a larger strategy. It has long been speculated that the upcoming AirTag 2 will also feature this technology. This would allow Apple to create an even denser network of devices capable of precise location tracking over long distances.

AirPods Pro 3: The U2 chip makes the difference in everyday life
The AirPods Pro 3 differ from their predecessors not only through detailed improvements in sound and software. The charging case with the U2 chip makes these earbuds a true evolution. With up to three times the range for location determination in the "Find My?" app, the AirPods Pro 3 can be reliably located even over longer distances. With this, Apple is relying on technology that increases security, convenience, and everyday usability – while simultaneously laying the foundation for future products like the AirTag 2.
