If you're wondering when the next Macs will be released, there's new information that can help you make your purchasing decision. Apple has already updated some models, and others are still pending. Things will get particularly exciting toward fall and early 2026, when new chips and possibly new designs will hit the market.
The WWDC developer conference is just around the corner. In addition to new software features for macOS, a lot is also expected in terms of Mac hardware. In recent months, Apple has already updated parts of its product lineup – including the MacBook Air M4 and new Mac Studio models with M3 Ultra or M4 Max chips. The MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini have also been equipped with the latest generation of M chips. Nevertheless, some devices are still open to future releases, and there are new clues about what will happen in the coming months.
MacBook Pro: M5 chip planned for fall
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple will unveil the MacBook Pro with the new M5 chip in fall 2025. This chip will be based on the third generation of TSMC's 3-nanometer process. Previous speculation about a 2-nanometer process has since been dismissed. However, according to recent reports, a comprehensive hardware redesign is not planned before 2026. The current MacBook Pro lineup was last updated in October 2024, so a fall 2025 update would be within the typical product cycle. If you're waiting for the most powerful model, this is the time to keep an eye on.

iMac: New model with larger display possible
The 24-inch iMac was last updated in 2024. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts Apple could release a larger 32-inch model with mini-LED between late 2025 and sometime in 2026. If you're not specifically waiting for a larger display, you can safely buy the current iMac. However, a version with the M5 chip could be released this fall.
Mac Pro: No update yet – M4 Ultra questionable
The Mac Pro hasn't yet switched to the M3 or M4. It's currently equipped with the M2 Ultra, which was introduced in mid-2023. This makes it the only Mac that hasn't yet switched to the new chip generation. Rumors suggest an update could arrive in mid-2025. Whether this will include an M4 Ultra is unclear, however. When Apple introduced the Mac Studio with the M4 Max and the M3 Ultra, it was explicitly stated that not every chip generation would get an Ultra version. This leaves open the question of whether an M4 Ultra will be released at all or whether Apple will jump straight to the M5 Ultra. If you're thinking about buying a Mac Pro, it might be worth waiting. However, with Apple, there's no guarantee that rumors will actually come true when they're scheduled to be released. This wouldn't be the first time a planned update has arrived significantly later than expected.
New Macs on the way – is it worth the wait?
An exciting year lies ahead for Mac users. Apple will most likely introduce the MacBook Pro with the M5 this fall. A larger iMac model could arrive towards the end of the year or early 2026. The Mac Pro remains a potential uncertainty for now, but an update is generally in the works. If you need a new device and don't need the latest chip, you can get it now. However, if you want maximum performance or are specifically waiting for specific models like the MacBook Pro or a larger iMac, it's worth being patient for a few more months.
