Apple introduced the first Pro Display XDR in 2019. A lot of time has passed since then without a true successor model being released. Now there are indications that Apple is working on a Pro Display XDR 2. Nothing has been officially confirmed, but various sources give a good idea of what to expect. Here's an overview of all known information.
The original Pro Display XDR was intended for professionals working with high-resolution image and video editing. It boasted impressive 6K resolution, accurate color reproduction, and HDR support, but completely lacked smart features. In comparison, Apple's Studio Display, available since 2022, offers significantly more technology—such as an integrated camera, speakers, microphones, and an A13 chip. The new Pro Display XDR 2 could also go in exactly this direction.
Apple chip in the display
According to a report by Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), the Pro Display XDR 2 will likely feature its own Apple Silicon chip. A similar design to the Studio Display is conceivable. The chip could be responsible for features such as an integrated webcam, a microphone array, high-quality speakers, and perhaps even Face ID for the Mac. Center Stage for video calls and automatic color temperature adjustment based on ambient light are also possible.
Display technology: OLED, QD-OLED and Quantum Dots
A major difference from the first model could be the panel. Apple is speculated to be using new technologies, such as OLED or a combination of OLED and QD-OLED. This would mean the Pro Display XDR 2 would offer deeper blacks, better contrast, and lower power consumption—particularly relevant for anyone working with color and light. In November 2024, display analyst Ross Young reported that Apple might use quantum dot films, like those already used in the new MacBook Pro models. According to Young, these films offer better color reproduction and motion performance than the previously used KSF phosphor film. The result would be a display with higher color accuracy, faster response times, and consistent image quality.
Connections and performance
An upgrade in connectivity and performance is also expected. The Pro Display XDR 2 will likely support Thunderbolt 5, which would enable significantly higher data transfer rates. Whether additional ports will be added is not yet known, but the development indicates that Apple is increasingly planning its displays as standalone devices with smart logic and versatile uses.
Schedule and release window
According to Gurman, Apple is working on several new external monitors. One of them is internally codenamed J527 and is scheduled to be released alongside a new Studio Display. This could be the new Pro Display XDR. A report from July 2023 suggested that a launch is not expected before the end of 2024. So far, there have been no official confirmations or concrete leaks regarding the exact release date. However, it is conceivable that Apple will unveil the display alongside a new Mac Pro—as it did with the first model in 2019.
Priority and target group
Even though Apple isn't currently giving the new Pro Display its highest priority, Gurman says, it's actively developing it further. The target audience remains small but specialized: professional users in media production, design, 3D, color editing, or music production. For these users, a Pro Display XDR 2 with new features, better color technology, and intelligent control would be a logical step.

The Pro Display XDR 2 hasn't been officially announced yet, but there are plenty of indications of an imminent launch. If you work in a field that demands the highest image quality, this display is worth keeping an eye on. With better technology, more features, and a possible release this year, it could become a true professional tool. Whether it will cost over €5,000 again remains to be seen—but if the performance is right, it could justify the price for many professionals.
