Since switching to Apple Silicon, Apple has significantly slimmed down its iMac line. The previous 21.5-inch and larger 27-inch iMacs have been replaced by a single 24-inch iMac. Many expected that Apple would eventually release a larger version—perhaps a 30- or 32-inch model, possibly even a new version of the iMac Pro. But that hasn't happened yet. Nevertheless, rumors of a larger version persist. While Apple has confirmed that there will not be a new 27-inch iMac, a larger model doesn't seem to be completely out of the question. There are indications that Apple is working on a new version of the iMac that could be aimed at professional users.
In November 2023, Apple introduced the new iMac with the M3 chip. Shortly after the presentation, the company made a surprisingly open statement to The Verge magazine about the future of the iMac line. Apple stated that there would no longer be a 27-inch iMac. This statement was unusual, as Apple does not normally comment on future product strategies. But here the company was very clear: the 24-inch version was the optimal solution, as it sits exactly between the existing 21.5- and 27-inch models. Interestingly, however, Apple only spoke of a 27-inch iMac. A larger model was not ruled out, which leaves room for speculation.
New rumors about a larger iMac
While Apple has denied a new 27-inch iMac, reports of a larger version continue to emerge. In a newsletter, well-connected journalist Mark Gurman mentioned that Apple remains interested in the professional market. An iMac with a larger display is certainly conceivable, although it remains unclear whether it could be released with the next M5 generation or later. As early as August 2024, Gurman reported that Apple was exploring the possibility of a larger iMac. While there is no official information on this, the idea appears to be at least being discussed within the company. Additional evidence comes from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with close ties to Apple's supply chain. He predicted in late 2023 that a "high-end 32-inch iMac with a mini-LED display" could be released in 2025. However, no new details have emerged since then. This could indicate that Apple has pushed back the schedule, but not necessarily that the project has been canceled.
Why a larger iMac would make sense
A larger iMac would fill an important gap in Apple's portfolio. While the 24-inch iMac is sufficient for many users, a more powerful all-in-one option for professional users is lacking. Larger displays are particularly in demand in creative professions, be it for video editing, graphic design or software development. Although Apple offers the Mac Studio in combination with the Studio Display or Pro Display XDR, a powerful iMac would be a convenient alternative for anyone who prefers an integrated system. A larger model could also be equipped with advanced display technology. Mini-LED would be a logical choice, as it is already used in the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro and ensures high brightness, contrast and more precise color representation.
Possible specifications and schedule
If Apple is actually planning a new iMac with a larger display, the technical specifications could look like this:
- display size between 30 and 32 inches
- Mini-LED technology for better brightness and contrast
- Apple M5 or a more powerful variant for professional applications
- Thinner display bezels and possibly a new case design
- Color options are more in the professional range, probably silver or space gray
It remains to be seen when such a model might appear. If Ming-Chi Kuo is right, 2025 would be a realistic date. However, there is no clear indication so far that Apple has already advanced development far enough to announce an imminent market launch.
