iPhone Fold: Display quality aims to outperform the competition

The iPhone Fold is taking more concrete shape. Apple is apparently working intensively on its first foldable smartphone, with a clear focus on display technology. A new supply chain report shows that Apple is specifically testing materials that are intended to differentiate the Fold's durability, scratch resistance, and feel from existing foldable devices.

Foldable smartphones are no longer a niche product. Nevertheless, displays are still considered the most vulnerable component of these devices. This is precisely where Apple is focusing its efforts. Instead of relying on tried-and-tested, but widespread solutions, the company is testing new protective films for the iPhone Fold display to clearly differentiate itself from the competition.

Apple's tests with new screen protectors

According to a recent report by The Elec, Apple is testing a transparent polyimide film as a protective layer for its foldable iPhone. This film will be applied to the ultra-thin glass of the foldable display. Currently, two materials are under consideration: polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, and clear polyimide, also known as CPI.

Ultra-thin glass is now standard for foldable displays, as it offers better image clarity and greater stability. However, the glass alone is not enough. To prevent scratches and damage, a flexible polymer film is necessary on the surface. This layer is the one that is constantly touched in everyday use and therefore significantly influences the perceived quality, durability, and feel of the device.

Differentiation from existing foldables

Many current foldable smartphones use PET film as a protective layer. Samsung also relies on this material in its devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip. However, Apple specifically tests CPI to differentiate itself technically from other manufacturers.

CPI is more expensive to produce than PET, but offers higher surface hardness and better scratch resistance. These properties could give the iPhone Fold an advantage in everyday use, especially with long-term use where signs of wear and tear quickly become noticeable.

Potential suppliers for the iPhone Fold

The South Korean company Kolon Industry is considered a potential supplier of CPI film. Kolon Industry has already set up a mass production line for CPI film and anticipates increasing demand due to upcoming foldable devices.

The ultra-thin glass for the iPhone Fold is reportedly supplied by the Chinese company Lens Technology. Lens Technology is also said to apply the final protective film to the glass, a crucial step in the production process.

A decision is imminent

The final decision between PET and CPI is expected in the near future. Apple is currently continuing to test the remaining components of the first foldable iPhone, so the material selection needs to be finalized soon to prepare for mass production.

Other known specifications

Besides the display technology, further details about the iPhone Fold are already circulating. Rumors suggest the device will feature a 7.8-inch, virtually crease-free inner display. This will be complemented by a 5.5-inch cover display. Touch ID, two rear cameras, the new A20 chip, and Apple's own "C2" modem are also being discussed.

The iPhone Fold is expected to launch later this year. A joint presentation with the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is apparently planned.

Apple's quality strategy for the iPhone Fold

With the iPhone Fold, Apple is pursuing a clear strategy: Its entry into the foldable smartphone market is to be driven not by speed, but by quality. Choosing the right screen protector may seem insignificant, but it is crucial for durability and user experience. Whether Apple ultimately opts for PET or CPI will significantly determine how much the iPhone Fold can differentiate itself from existing foldable devices. (Image: Shutterstock / Caroline Ruda)
