ChatGPT is becoming more affordable, and at the same time, the platform is opening up to advertising for the first time. OpenAI has introduced a new subscription tier, expanding ChatGPT's pricing model. Simultaneously, the company announced it will be testing ads in certain plans. Both steps mark a clear strategic evolution and affect millions of users worldwide.
Since ChatGPT has become an integral part of many work and everyday processes, the pressure to broaden its reach has also increased. Varying usage intensities, rising operating costs, and the desire to make ChatGPT accessible to as many people as possible are now leading to concrete changes. OpenAI is responding with a new, affordable subscription option and a carefully planned introduction of advertising.
New subscription tier: ChatGPT Go
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Go, a more affordable subscription tier available worldwide. The monthly price is $8. ChatGPT Go is aimed at users who find the free plan too limited but don't necessarily want to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus.
Compared to the free version, ChatGPT Go offers significantly more performance. It includes enhanced access to the latest GPT-5.2 Instant model. Additionally, it provides ten times more messages, file uploads, and image generation than the free plan. The storage capacity is also larger, allowing ChatGPT to retain more information over a longer period. This results in more consistent responses, especially for recurring topics or long-term projects.
ChatGPT Go was previously available in India and some other countries and is now being officially rolled out worldwide.
Overview of all ChatGPT subscriptions
With the introduction of ChatGPT Go, there are now three regular subscription tiers:
- ChatGPT Go for $8 per month
- ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month
- ChatGPT Pro for $200 per month
For tasks requiring deeper understanding, complex analysis, or multi-stage reasoning, ChatGPT Go is insufficient. In these cases, ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Pro is still necessary, as only these plans offer access to the advanced GPT 5.2 thinking model.
In addition to these offers, there are also ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise, which are aimed at businesses and also remain ad-free.
Advertising in ChatGPT: Testing begins
In addition to the new subscription tier, OpenAI announced that it will begin testing advertising in the coming weeks. Initially, this will affect the free ChatGPT plan and ChatGPT Go. The tests will start with registered adult users in the US.
The planned advertisements will appear exclusively at the end of answers and only if there is a relevant sponsored product or service that fits the current conversation. The advertising will be clearly marked as such and visually separated from the actual answer.
Users also have the option to understand why they are being shown a particular ad. Each ad can be hidden.
Clear commitments to data protection and content separation
OpenAI explicitly states that ads will not influence ChatGPT's organic responses. Content will continue to be generated independently of advertising partners. Further commitments are a key part of the announcement:
- Conversations with ChatGPT remain private from advertisers.
- No user data will be sold to advertisers.
- There will permanently be at least one paid ChatGPT subscription tier without advertising.
In addition, there are content restrictions for advertising. Advertisements may not appear in conversations that address sensitive or regulated topics. These include, but are not limited to, health, mental health, and politics.

Classification of the advertising strategy
OpenAI justifies the introduction of advertising with the goal of offering ChatGPT for free or at affordable prices in the long term. Ads are intended to help finance the infrastructure and keep access to AI technology open to a broad user base.
At the same time, the company emphasizes that user trust remains a top priority. Feedback will be actively evaluated to gradually improve the presentation of advertising without negatively impacting the user experience.
ChatGPT is becoming cheaper and opening up to advertising
With ChatGPT Go and the planned advertising, OpenAI is noticeably, but deliberately, changing the direction of ChatGPT. The service will become more affordable and therefore more accessible, while more powerful and ad-free options will remain. Advertising will be introduced cautiously, clearly labeled, and limited in content. Overall, this demonstrates a strategy that aims to combine growth, funding, and trust without jeopardizing ChatGPT's core functionality. (Image: Shutterstock / Diego Thomazini)
