iPhone Fold: This is what Apple's first foldable is supposed to look like, according to leaks

The iPhone Fold appears to be on the verge of transforming from a years-long rumor into a concrete product. New leaks provide detailed information about the design, technology, and positioning of Apple's first foldable smartphone. Particularly striking is the claim to eliminate key weaknesses of previous foldable devices, especially the visible display crease and the device's thickness. The latest information paints a picture of how Apple intends to enter the foldable smartphone market.

While other manufacturers have already refined their foldable smartphones through several generations, Apple has deliberately taken its time. This reticence could be strategic. Instead of being an early adopter, Apple seems to be focusing on addressing known problems within this device category. Recent leaks suggest that the iPhone Fold is intended to be less of an experiment and more of a mature, premium product.

First concrete insights through a leak from Jon Prosser

The most comprehensive information currently available comes from YouTuber Jon Prosser. In a video on his channel FrontPageTech, he showed 3D renderings of the iPhone Fold, which were released shortly before Christmas. It's worth noting that Apple sued Prosser in July for earlier leaks regarding iOS 26 and the so-called Liquid Glass design.

According to Prosser, the renderings are based on internal information and show a very realistic picture of the final device. The market launch is expected in fall 2026. A joint presentation with the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is planned.

Display sizes and form factor

The iPhone Fold is expected to offer a 7.8-inch internal display when unfolded. Its usable screen area is more reminiscent of a small iPad than a traditional smartphone. When folded, a 5.5-inch external display is available.

In direct comparison, the main display is slightly smaller than that of current competing models. Both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold have displays around 8 inches. However, Apple seems to have consciously accepted this disadvantage in order to optimize other aspects.

Wrinkle-free display as a key difference

A key aspect of the leaks concerns the display itself. According to reports from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has developed a technology that almost completely eliminates the visible crease.

According to Prosser, a special metal plate is used beneath the display. This distributes the pressure evenly across the entire surface when folding. Additionally, the hinge is said to be made of liquid metal. This combination is intended to prevent a permanent crease from forming over time. With this, Apple would solve one of the biggest problems of current foldable devices.

Dimensions and housing

The iPhone Fold also sets new standards in terms of thickness. When closed, the device measures approximately 9 millimeters. When unfolded, the thickness is reduced to about 4.5 millimeters. This would make the iPhone Fold even thinner than the iPhone Air, which measures 5.6 millimeters.

The slim profile is achieved without compromising stability and build quality. The design remains clean and minimalist, typical of Apple.

Cameras, modem and security

According to the leak, the device will also feature a total of four cameras. Specific details regarding sensors or resolutions are not yet available. The technology is complemented by a new C2 modem, which is specifically designed to optimize battery life.

One notable decision is the return of Touch ID. The fingerprint sensor will be integrated into the power button. Currently, Touch ID is not available on any new iPhone. Face ID could thus be supplemented or, depending on the situation, replaced.

Colors and variants

The iPhone Fold will launch in two colors: black and white. Apple is thus foregoing eye-catching color options for now, opting instead for a more understated, classic look.

Price and competition

The price is likely to be one of the biggest hurdles for many potential buyers. Analysts expect an entry price between $2,000 and $2,500.

For comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $1,999. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is priced at around $1,800. Apple is thus clearly positioning the iPhone Fold in the upper premium segment and is apparently banking on the technology and build quality justifying the higher price.

A glimpse into the future of the iPhone Fold

There's still time until the expected unveiling in September 2026. However, current leaks already provide a fairly complete picture of what to expect. The iPhone Fold is said to be thin, technologically advanced, and, most importantly, free of a visible display crease.

Whether Apple will truly set new standards for foldable smartphones remains to be seen with the final device. However, it's clear that Apple's entry into the market is likely to significantly alter the landscape.
