This new version could address the very problems that caused the first model to fail.
The iPhone Air was conceived as an ultra-slim iPhone that would clearly stand out from other models. In practice, however, the device failed to impress either buyers or market observers. Sales figures remained low, and interest was limited. Nevertheless, Apple apparently still sees potential in the concept. The iPhone Air 2 is not intended to be a simple update, but rather a redesigned version with significant improvements.
This year's iPhone Air and its weak demand
It became apparent shortly after its launch that the iPhone Air was experiencing problems. While the iPhone 17 Pro struggled with supply shortages, the iPhone Air was available almost immediately. This indicated early on that demand was significantly lower than expected.
Several reports confirmed this impression. In one instance, it was stated that Apple had reduced manufacturing orders for the iPhone Air to almost the level of a production shutdown. A later report went even further, claiming that production of the device had been completely discontinued.
A look at the market as a whole also shows that ultra-slim smartphones are currently struggling. Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge reportedly sold poorly. As a result, other manufacturers are said to have completely abandoned their own plans for particularly thin smartphones.
The two main problems of the iPhone Air
The main problem doesn't seem to be a lack of interest in a slim smartphone. Rather, many were unwilling to pay a high price for a device that involved noticeable compromises.
Only one camera is a clear disadvantage
One of the biggest criticisms of the iPhone Air was its camera setup. The device only had a single camera. In direct comparison, this seemed unappealing. The base model iPhone 17 already offered two cameras, while the iPhone 17 Pro was equipped with three. For many, the iPhone Air was therefore clearly inferior in terms of technology.
The price exacerbated the problem
Additionally, the price came into play. The iPhone Air costs around €250 more than the iPhone 17 and is only about €100 cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro. For a model with fewer features, this price is incomprehensible to many. Even users who were generally interested in the design likely refrained from buying it when they saw the price.
The iPhone Air 2 could solve both problems
According to a recent report by The Information, Apple is now addressing these very weaknesses. Due to the poor sales figures of the first model, the company is reportedly starting from scratch and redesigning the iPhone Air.
Specifically, the report states that a second camera is being considered for the iPhone Air 2. Additionally, a price reduction is being discussed to make the device more attractive to a wider range of buyers. Both of these measures would directly address the biggest criticisms of the first iPhone Air.
The report also makes it clear, however, that these are only considerations so far. There is no final decision and no official confirmation. Nevertheless, the direction suggests that Apple has recognized the reasons for the failure.
Better chances for the iPhone Air 2
Should Apple actually implement the planned changes, the iPhone Air 2 could have significantly better chances of success starting in 2027. An ultra-slim design combined with competitive camera features and a more realistic price would make the model much more appealing to many.
The first iPhone Air failed primarily due to unbalanced compromises.
