Apple is currently undergoing a major overhaul of its AI activities. Its long-time AI chief is stepping down, the organization is being restructured, and external pressure is mounting. OpenAI, alerted by Google's Gemini, is focusing all its efforts on accelerating the development of ChatGPT. This situation illustrates how intense the AI race has become and how much Apple is being challenged to reassert its position.
Competition between Apple, Google, and OpenAI intensified significantly last year. While OpenAI and Google are releasing new models and features at short intervals, Apple is struggling internally with staff losses and declining motivation within its AI team. The announced restructuring is intended to help restore structure and speed. At the same time, expectations for the company are growing ever higher, especially with regard to the planned launch of the new Siri next year.
Apple loses its AI chief and restarts the process.
Apple has officially confirmed that John Giannandrea, the current head of its AI division, will retire next year and is stepping down immediately. His successor is Amar Subramanya, who brings experience from previous leadership positions at Google and Microsoft.
The change comes at a particularly difficult time for Apple. The internal AI team is considered understaffed, and morale is reportedly at an all-time low. Apple lost many specialists, especially in the past year, which has noticeably slowed the development of new AI features. Subramanya is thus taking over a department that desperately needs stability, new personnel, and clear priorities.
Restructuring of AI initiatives
Apple is reorganizing its entire AI organization. Subramanya will take over key areas such as Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and quality assessment. Other parts of the previous structure will now report directly to Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue to facilitate closer collaboration with related teams.
With this new structure, Apple is trying to reduce existing hurdles and more closely integrate product development with other departments. This is particularly important because upcoming iOS versions and the new Siri will work closely with AI methods. Time is of the essence, as the market is evolving faster than ever before.
OpenAI issues „Code Red“
Parallel to Apple's transformation, concerns are growing at OpenAI about being overtaken by Google's Gemini. According to an internal memo cited by the Wall Street Journal, CEO Sam Altman declared a "Code Red" on Monday. The directive is clear: all efforts are to be focused on improving the quality of ChatGPT. Other projects will be put on hold.
Altman outlines specific goals. The daily user experience should be improved, personalization features expanded, the system's speed and reliability increased, and the range of responses broadened. This means OpenAI is fully focused on advancing ChatGPT to avoid being overtaken by Gemini.
The pressure on Apple is growing.
While OpenAI and Google are locked in a direct race, the industry is watching Apple. Expectations are rising, as the company must prove it can remain competitive in the AI era. The upcoming Siri version will be the decisive test. If Apple fails to make significant progress here, the company risks falling further behind in the AI field.
The combination of personnel changes, organizational restructuring, and intense external pressure demonstrates how much is at stake for Apple. The next few months will be crucial in determining whether the company regains momentum or whether AI leadership remains firmly with OpenAI and Google.
Apple's turning point in the race for AI supremacy
Apple is facing a challenging period. The departure of its former AI chief, internal restructuring, and growing competition are putting the company under pressure. At the same time, OpenAI's "Code Red" demonstrates just how serious the competition has become and how quickly the AI market can change. For Apple, this means making clear decisions, strengthening its team, and ensuring the upcoming Siri version represents a genuine leap forward. Only then will Apple remain relevant in the AI race.
