Report: Apple considers buying Warner Bros. media library

Apple is once again the focus of industry rumors. This time, it's not about new devices or software, but about its potential expansion into the media business. According to current information, Apple is said to be interested in Warner Bros. Discovery's massive TV and film library. The US company Warner Bros. Discovery has officially announced that it is open to bids for the entire company or individual parts of it. This could mark one of the biggest moves in the streaming and media market in recent years.

Warner Bros. Discovery is under severe financial pressure. The media conglomerate, which includes Warner Bros. Pictures, HBO, and Discovery, has officially begun the sale process. CEO David Zaslav will receive financial bonuses if he completes a sale, further increasing the pressure to find a solution quickly. According to Bloomberg, several major companies have expressed interest, including Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Comcast. It's particularly exciting that Apple—a company previously known for its reluctance to make large acquisitions—appears on this list.

Warner Bros. Discovery looking for buyers

Warner Bros. Discovery has begun inviting bids from potential buyers. The company is leaving open whether it will sell the entire company or just certain assets. Paramount Skydance has already offered $24 per share for the entire company. However, this offer was rejected.

The situation remains tense. According to Bloomberg financial journalists, Zaslav reportedly told company executives that Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Comcast were interested in acquiring the extensive TV and film library. This library includes numerous well-known titles and brands – an attractive package for any streaming provider looking to expand its content.

How realistic is a purchase by Apple?

Whether Apple is actually seriously considering a purchase remains unclear. It's also possible that the company's name is being deliberately mentioned to encourage other bidders to make higher offers. Apple is known for rarely acquiring large companies. The company's largest acquisition to date was the purchase of Beats Electronics for three billion dollars in 2013. A takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, or even just parts of it, would cost many times more—estimates suggest tens of billions of dollars.

In addition to the financial outlay, integration would also be an enormous challenge. Merging Apple's technology-focused corporate culture with Warner Bros.' creative filmmaking world would be a complex and risky move.

Apple's strategy in the streaming market

Apple TV has so far been a streaming service that relies almost exclusively on in-house productions. Series, films, and documentaries come from Apple's own development or from exclusively commissioned studios. In recent years, the company has placed a strong emphasis on quality and brand image, rather than acquiring a large content library.

Eddy Cue, Apple's Senior Vice President of Services, recently stated in a podcast that Apple is "not actively seeking acquisitions to strengthen Apple TV." Instead, they prefer to develop content in-house. At the same time, Cue did not rule out the possibility of the company seizing the opportunity if it were to arise.

So, if a particularly valuable offer like HBO's intellectual property were to come along, Apple would likely be interested. According to industry insiders, Apple tried to buy HBO from AT&T Time Warner about ten years ago. The deal fell through because AT&T wanted to sell not only HBO but also cable networks—a package Apple didn't want and would likely avoid to this day.

Warner Bros. Discovery under pressure

Warner Bros. Discovery's financial situation is challenging. Declining revenues in the traditional TV business, high levels of debt, and fierce competition in the streaming sector are placing a massive strain on the company. In this situation, a partial sale or even a breakup of the group appears increasingly realistic.

This opens up opportunities for buyers like Apple. A selective acquisition of individual content or brands—such as HBO or certain film rights—would be strategically interesting for Apple without having to take over the entire company. HBO, in particular, is considered a prestige brand with great potential to make Apple TV more attractive.

The current status of the talks

Everything is still in a very early phase. Warner Bros. Discovery is in talks with various potential buyers, including Apple. Before any concrete offers can be made, all interested parties must sign non-disclosure agreements. This gives them access to internal financial data and allows them to examine the company's financial situation more closely. Only then can it be assessed whether Apple or another interested party will actually submit a bid.

An Apple purchase of the entire Warner Bros. media library, or even the entire company, would be a major step – one that goes far beyond the company's current strategy. However, given the current situation at Warner Bros. Discovery, it's not out of the question that Apple could deliberately acquire individual, valuable parts of the company to strengthen its position for Apple TV.

Apple is monitoring the market – and keeping all options open

Whether Apple will actually take the step toward a multi-billion dollar media deal remains to be seen. So far, the company has shown little interest in large-scale acquisitions, preferring to focus on organic growth and in-house productions. Nevertheless, the current circumstances at Warner Bros. Discovery could prompt them to at least consider acquiring individual brands or rights.

A purchase of HBO or other premium content would immediately elevate Apple TV to a new level and narrow the gap between it and Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+. It's all speculation at the moment, but the talks indicate that Apple remains vigilant in the streaming business—and could well be ready to make a big entry given the right opportunity.
