At its REFRAME event, Vimeo announced support for new 3D video formats on Apple Vision Pro. With this, the company further expands its platform for immersive video and positions itself as one of the first third-party platforms to support multiple Apple-specific 3D formats.

Since the launch of the Vimeo app for Apple Vision Pro in October of last year, the range of spatial video content has evolved significantly. The app previously supported Apple's Spatial Video format, which already provided realistic depth effects. Now, Vimeo is expanding its range of features to include three additional formats: VR180, Apple Immersive Video, and the new Apple Projected Media Profile. The company also announced several new AI-based tools and video management features designed to make working with content more efficient.

VR180: Established 3D standard with a wide field of view

The VR180 format is one of the most popular 3D video formats. It offers a 180-degree field of view and is typically recorded stereoscopically. Compared to 360-degree videos, VR180 is easier to produce because only the front half of the field of view is captured. Vimeo's new support should therefore lead to an increase in 3D content optimized for Apple Vision Pro.

Apple Immersive Video: High-quality 3D experiences

Apple Immersive Video is Apple's preferred format for spatial content on Apple Vision Pro. It combines stereoscopic 8K video with spatial audio and uses a special projection algorithm that reduces distortion. This algorithm takes the camera used into account, providing a more natural rendering than the standard VR180 algorithm.

Apple uses this format for its own original productions, such as the Wild Life episode about orangutans. Until now, Apple Immersive Video was available exclusively through the Apple TV app outside of mainland China, as well as through Migu Video and Tencent Video in China. The integration with Vimeo marks the first third-party platform supporting this format.

Apple Projected Media Profile: New format for flexible playback

The Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP) was introduced at WWDC25. It's a new media profile that supports 180, 360, and wide FOV videos. APMP allows 3D cameras to embed projection data and camera information directly into the file, making it easier and more accurate to display videos on Apple Vision Pro.

The integration of APMP with Vimeo creates a seamless workflow. Videos can be shot with Blackmagic cameras, edited in Final Cut Pro, and then published directly to Vimeo. This creates a seamless production chain for professional creators from capture to immersive playback.

Further innovations at the Vimeo REFRAME event

In addition to the new 3D formats, Vimeo has announced several additional features powered by artificial intelligence and efficient workflow management. These include:

  • Ask Your Library: An advanced, AI-powered search function that allows you to search for content within your Vimeo library.
  • MCP support: The integration of multi-creator pipelines allows video libraries to be directly connected to AI agents and large language models.
  • Vimeo Review: New features for collaborative feedback management within teams and with customers.
  • Answer Engine Optimization: A technology that automatically generates metadata, chapters, and titles to make videos more discoverable.

These additions demonstrate that Vimeo is not only focusing on immersive formats, but also on intelligent tools that simplify the production, organization, and publishing of video content.

Vimeo strengthens the ecosystem around Apple Vision Pro

Apple Vision Pro is considered one of the leading platforms for immersive experiences. Vimeo's expanded support strengthens this ecosystem and makes spatial video more accessible. The new VR180, Apple Immersive Video, and APMP formats significantly broaden the offerings for creators and viewers. Vimeo is thus further developing into a central platform for high-quality 3D and spatial video and is helping to ensure that Apple Vision Pro becomes even more firmly established in the field of immersive media in the future.
