The iPad mini 8 is in the works. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, considered a highly reliable source, has confirmed that Apple is already working on the next generation of the compact tablet. The new model is intended to be the successor to the iPad mini 7, which was released about a year ago. Initial information from Apple's code and reports from the supply chain point to significant technical improvements. A major leap is expected, especially in the chip and display.
The iPad mini has established itself as the handy iPad for anyone looking for plenty of power in a compact format. With the iPad mini 8, Apple is apparently focusing on even more power and modern technologies previously reserved for larger devices. Numerous details have leaked out in recent months, providing an increasingly clear picture. These primarily concern the new processor, possible display changes, the release schedule, and the price.
processor and performance
The iPad mini 8 is said to feature the new A19 Pro chip. Hints of this come from Apple code that was accidentally released. The A19 Pro is already used in the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone Air. These iPhone models feature the high-end version with a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU. The iPhone Air uses a mid-range version with one fewer GPU core – this exact version is expected to be installed in the iPad mini 8. The A19 Pro is based on the improved 3-nanometer N3P process and is said to be both more efficient and faster. It features a 16-core neural engine, next-generation dynamic caching, and unified image compression.
New GPU architecture brings noticeable performance boost
The GPU has also been redesigned, featuring a new architecture with a larger cache, more memory, and integrated neural accelerators. According to Apple, GPU performance is up to three times faster than its predecessor. These improvements are particularly noticeable in graphics-intensive tasks, such as gaming, creative applications, or AI-supported processes. The chip thus provides a significant performance boost without compromising battery life. This makes the iPad mini 8 one of the fastest and most efficient compact tablets on the market.
display
Another focus of current rumors concerns the display. Several sources report that Apple could switch to OLED technology for the iPad mini 8. A Chinese leaker with contacts in Apple's supply chain has learned that Apple has already tested OLED panels from Samsung. Whether these displays will also offer a higher refresh rate than the 60 Hz of the current model remains unclear. The screen could also be slightly larger. Instead of the 8.3-inch display of the iPad mini 7, the iPad mini 8 is expected to have an 8.7-inch display.
OLED technology improves image quality and efficiency
OLED technology offers clear advantages – each pixel can be individually controlled, enabling deeper blacks, higher contrast, and more precise color reproduction. Power consumption is also lower, which benefits battery life. Apple already uses OLED in all flagship iPhones and, since 2024, also in the iPad Pro models. Unlike those, however, the iPad mini 8 is likely to feature a single-layer LTPS OLED panel. It is more cost-effective and energy-efficient, but lacks the brightness and variable refresh rate (ProMotion) of dual-layer LTPO OLEDs.
timeline for market launch
It is currently unclear when the iPad mini 8 will be released. The research firm Omdia does not expect a model with an OLED display until 2027. Other reports – such as those from ET News and ZDNet Korea – suggest 2026. According to these reports, the iPad mini and iPad Air could receive an OLED update at the same time. According to a report from May 2024, Samsung Display has already begun developing OLED sample panels for the new model. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025. If this schedule is met, a presentation sometime in 2026 would be realistic. Analysts at Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) also expect an OLED iPad mini, which will be around 8.5 inches in size. They expect a market launch in 2026, while new iPad Air models with 11- and 13-inch OLED displays could follow in 2027.
Price
There is no concrete information yet on the price of the iPad mini 8. Apple will likely stick with the current starting price of $499, or €599. However, Apple is under pressure as more and more affordable tablets are entering the market. Mark Gurman believes it's possible that Apple is considering a cheaper version or a price adjustment. Those who are price-conscious will find the 10th-generation iPad to be an affordable alternative. It starts at €399 and offers many of the same features as the iPad mini—including Touch ID and Center Stage. This makes it an attractive choice for anyone looking for good value without sacrificing Apple quality.
iPad mini 8: Compact, powerful, and future-proof
The iPad mini 8 represents the next major step in Apple's most compact tablet lineup. The new A19 Pro chip promises more performance, more efficient power distribution, and significantly improved graphics capabilities. With a possible OLED display, the device would also represent a leap forward in both appearance and technology. The release date is not yet official, but there are strong indications that it will be unveiled in 2026. Apple is likely to maintain its current price level but could respond to growing competition. The iPad mini 8 is expected to be the most powerful mini model yet—compact, modern, and ready for the years to come. (Image: Shutterstock / blackzheep)
