Setting up Time Machine backup on your Mac

If you don't want to lose your data on your Mac, a backup is a must. macOS comes with a simple solution: Time Machine. This backup feature automatically backs up all data on your Mac—from documents to system preferences. Whether due to a hardware failure, accidental deletion, or a macOS issue, data loss happens faster than you think. Time Machine is the easiest way to protect yourself. Setup is straightforward and runs completely automatically. All you need is an external drive and a few minutes of your time, and Time Machine takes care of the rest. Connect backup drive

First, you'll need an external drive . Ideally, you'll want a hard drive or SSD with at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac. For example, if your Mac has 1 TB of storage, the backup drive should be at least 2 TB in size. Connect the drive to your Mac via USB, USB-C, or Thunderbolt. You can rename the drive, for example, "TimeMachine," so you can easily identify it later. macOS will usually automatically detect the drive and ask if you want to use it as a backup volume. If it doesn't, set it up manually—as described in the next step.

Activate Time Machine

Open System Preferences on your Mac. On macOS Sequoia (and Ventura), you'll find Time Machine under "General" in the sidebar. On older versions, Time Machine is located directly in the System Preferences menu.
Click “Add Backup Volume” or the plus sign (+), select your external drive, and confirm.

If necessary, macOS automatically formats the drive in APFS format, which has been standard for Time Machine since Big Sur.

Once setup is complete, the first full backup will begin. This may take some time depending on the amount of data. After that, all backups will run automatically in the background.

Adjust backup options

In the Time Machine settings, under "Options," you'll find the option to exclude folders and drives. If, for example, you have large video archives or external drives that you don't want to back up, you can add them here. This saves storage space and speeds up backups. You can also see here whether your backup drive is encrypted. If not, we recommend enabling encryption—this way, your data is protected even if the drive is lost.

Use automatic backups

Time Machine creates hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for older data. Older backups are automatically deleted when storage space becomes limited. As long as your backup drive is connected, you don't have to worry about anything. You can also use multiple drives and alternate them—Time Machine will automatically detect them and use them as an additional backup.

Test backup recovery

A working backup is only useful if you can access it in an emergency. Therefore, you should check whether you can perform a restore. Restart your Mac and hold down Command (⌘) + R during startup to enter Recovery Mode. Select "Restore from Time Machine Backup" and check that your backup drive is visible and readable. You don't have to complete the process—just make sure everything is recognized.
